life and work

Simon Gstöttmayr began his career in 2000 as Matthias Dörfler's assistant editor. From 2002 to 2003 he worked as an intern at the Munich post-production company Das Werk . He has been working as a freelance editor since 2003, initially in the field of advertising and trailers .

The TV comedy Dirty South (2010) by veteran director Klaus Lemke gave Gstöttmayr the opportunity to cut a feature film for the first time. The film was made in the typical Lemke manner without a script, with a tiny budget, handheld camera and amateur actors .

In 2011 Gstöttmayr edited his first feature film, the comedy A Very Hot Number by Markus Goller . The film won several acting awards and landed eighth of the German theatrical films of 2011 with over one million viewers. The road movie Ms. Ella , also directed by Markus Goller, was even more successful in 2013 and came fifth among the German theatrical films of the year.

With the tragic comedy Today I'm Blonde (2013), Gstöttmayr began a partnership with director Marc Rothemund, which has now comprised three films . The film and its leading actress Lisa Tomaschewsky were nominated for the audience prize Jupiter Award in 2014 . The second project with Marc Rothemund, There must man by (2015), was not all so smoothly: The director retired with the production companies NRP and after disputes Warner Brothers , and Gstöttmayr had the cutting phase with the producers brothers Stefan and Alexander Thies to Lead to the end. Afterwards, Rothmund only wanted to be officially named as a co-author; The industry pseudonym Thomas Lee appeared in the credits of "Regie" . Unaffected by this, Rothemund and Gstöttmayr came together again in 2017 for the bestseller film This stupid heart , which was among the most successful German productions with a total of over two million viewers in both 2017 and 2018.

In the meantime, Gstöttmayr had already assembled Highway to Hellas (2015, director: Aron Lehmann ), and Karoline Herfurth's directorial debut, SMS für Dich (2016). This film was also able to place itself among the ten best-grossing German productions of the year and was nominated for a Jupiter Award .

By far the most successful assembly work in Gstöttmayr's career so far is the 2018 film adaptation of Hape Kerkeling's childhood memories The boy needs to get some fresh air . The feature film directed by Caroline Link had its theatrical release in December 2018 and reached around 3.4 million viewers by March 2019, which earned it the German Film Prize as the film with the highest number of visitors . The film also won the Lola in the category Best Female Supporting Role ( Luise Heyer ) and a bronze Lola in the category Best Feature Film , and was nominated in three other categories. Caroline Link previously won the Bavarian Film Prize 2018 .

In February 2019, Gstöttmayr's second collaboration with Karoline Herfurth, Sweethearts , started in German cinemas.

Simon Gstöttmayr is a member of the German Film Academy and in the Federal Association of Film Editing Editor eV (BFS) .
