Act

Sonenberg identified the eIF4E protein, which belongs to the 5'-cap structure of mRNA , and discovered the IRES mechanism for initiating translation in eukaryotes and the cap-dependent regulation of translation by eIF4E-binding proteins (4E-BP). He was able to show the proto-oncogene character of the eIF4E and that rapamycin (sirolimus) inhibits the eIF4E protein (see mTOR ). Through studies on 4E-BP knockout mice , Sonnenberg and co-workers were able to show that eIF4E plays an important role in the metabolism of adipose tissue , in innate immunity and in learning and memory processes .

Further work deals with virology : poliovirus , rhinoviruses and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
