history

The Catholic residents of Züsch and Dechant Burg from Hermeskeil have been trying unsuccessfully since 1750 to build a new church to replace the chapel in the Albachtal , which was in a very poor structural condition . When the rule of Züsch came to Baden in 1776 , Margrave Karl Friedrich allowed a Catholic chapel to be built in Züsch in 1780. The margrave gave the Catholic community, which was very poor, the wood needed to build the chapel from the manorial forest and an annual pension of 66 guilders from the Catholic church fund of Kirchberg. The chapel, which could seat 290 people, was inaugurated in 1784.

Since the chapel had become dilapidated, the municipal master builder Johann Baptist Bingler ( Trier ) drew up a plan to expand the church in 1840. Due to a lack of financial means, the parish of Züsch received an unexpected gift of 1320 thalers from the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV in 1843 , so that an attempt was made to build larger than originally planned. This led to difficulties with the administrative authorities, but Bingler was allowed to work out a new plan that not only lengthened the church, but also widened it so that a cross-shaped floor plan was created. In the meantime the community managed to collect 200 thalers itself for the construction of the church, and in 1848 the foundation stone was laid . The stones for the church building were broken free of charge by the residents of Züsch, Neuhütten , Muhl and Damflos and brought to the building site. The timber was obtained from the royal forests for a small fee . The Protestant residents of Züsch also took part in the delivery of the building material. In 1849 the shell of the church was completed and the first service could be held. The solemn church consecration took place on September 15, 1851, the Trier Bishop Wilhelm Arnoldi .

At the beginning of the 19th century the church had become too small, so that in 1909 the architect Johann Goergen ( Fraulautern ) was commissioned to design plans to enlarge the church. A three - aisled neo - baroque hall was created with a widened west facade with three towers with Welscher dome instead of the former ridge turret . The foundation stone was laid on May 16, 1910. The benedication on November 12, 1911 was carried out by Dechant Linn from Hermeskeil. There was no consecration by the bishop.

In 1967/68 and 1993 the church underwent renovations .

Furnishing

The neo-baroque interior of the church has been preserved. The high altar and pulpit are made in the Rococo style.
