St. Clemens in Neudorf

The Roman Catholic branch church St. Clemens in Neudorf , a district of Weismain in the Upper Franconian district of Lichtenfels , was built from 1732 to 1738 as a sandstone building in the Baroque style , on a hill a little away from the actual village.

history

A wooden church, probably derived from a field chapel, was first mentioned in 1520. It was consecrated to Saint Clement . Neudorf already belonged to the Modschiedel parish, founded in 1382 . After about a hundred years, there was a larger wooden church in the village that had no tower. Over time, Neudorf developed into a place of pilgrimage . From 1720 this led to the planning and preparation of a new building, which began on August 22, 1732. The draftsman is not known to me. The master masons Johann Vogel from Staffelstein and Johann Gebhard from Weismain and the master carpenters Andreas Krapp and Johann Kraßen built the church until 1737. At the provisional inauguration on May 9, 1738 by the Modschiedler pastor, 3000 guilders were used. The financing came from the interest on loaned money to the pilgrims. The establishment of the church cost a further 1000 guilders and lasted until 1743. The consecration of the church was carried out on September 2, 1766 by Bamberg's auxiliary bishop Heinrich Joseph Nitschke . At the end of the 18th century, pilgrimages turned to St. Wendelin , to whom pilgrims prayed in stables in the event of illnesses in the cattle or misfortunes. In 1812 over 5000 pilgrims came to Neudorf despite a ban by the Bavarian government. Missing windows and a leaky roof required major repairs at the beginning of the 19th century. In the 1950s, parts of the roof were re-covered with slate. From 1984 to 1986 the parish had an extensive restoration carried out. The costs amounted to DM 731,000 and included, among other things, static security measures, a new roof covering and the restoration of the ceiling painting. The partially medieval cemetery wall was repaired in 1992/1993 for 80,000 DM. In 2015/2016, the municipality again commissioned an extensive renovation. Among other things, new lighting was installed, the roof re-covered and the roof structure repaired. The costs were around 550,000 euros.

Building description

West portal

The church stands outside Neudorf on a northern hill in a circular walled cemetery. The altogether 25.5 meters long and up to 14.5 meters wide church was built in the Baroque style. The facade consists of exposed sandstones. It is structured by pilaster strips and arched windows with drilled frames. The two eastern outer corners of the nave to the choir and tower are rounded. The south portal has a richly profiled and drilled frame. The west facade has two oval windows at the top and a round-arched portal in the middle with contender profiles and putti heads on the apex . Above it is an inscription field with the designation "SUB F • P • N • F • P • L • IGM • H • L • 1 • 7 • 34". A reference to the pastor Nikolaus Fischer from Langheim as the initiator of the church building. The portal and the inscription are framed by Tuscan pilasters , entablature and round gable legs. The upper end of the main portal is formed by a sandstone figure of St. Clement in a niche with the attributes of anchor and cross on a base with the inscription “St. Clemens 1733 “and a segmented arched cornice. The slated roof of the nave is hipped to the west .

The five-story church tower houses the sacristy on the basement , which is spanned by a groin vault. Above this is an oratory with a flat ceiling, which is accessed from the south wall of the choir via a spiral staircase. The surrounding eaves cornice is partially carried out between the first and second floors. There is a belt strap between the second and third floors. At the end there is a slate pointed helmet, the ground plan of which is transferred from the square with slips into the octagon.

The inside choir is six meters wide and around ten meters long. It consists of the end of the choir with three octagonal sides, spanned by a ridge vault with stitch caps and the choir with two window axes, spanned by a barrel vault with stitch caps. The front wall of the choir has a small round window. The Sakristei door in the southern wall to the church tower has a geohrte and profiled framing, the chorus bow transom profiles .

The three-axle nave is spanned by a flat slab with a hollow on the edge. The east corners with the side altars are rounded. A single-storey gallery with balustrades is located on the west wall and the western parts of the north and south walls. The gallery is drawn forward on five sides in the middle and carries the organ there. In the interior it rests on four marbled wooden pillars.

Furnishing

Gallery

The high altar has a marbled wooden structure that the carpenter Johann Nicolaus Lauter from Hollfeld built from 1740 to 1743. The altar panel, framed by full columns, shows the transfiguration of St. Clement. On the sloping side parts, the outer corners of which end with full columns and pilasters on the back wall, there are golden wooden figures, on the left St. Bernard and St. Magdalena and on the right St. Wendelin and St. Nepomuk . Above the altar sheet is the coat of arms of the Langheim abbot Stephan Mösinger. The extract contains a picture of the coronation of Mary. The rotating tabernacle , which is decorated with urns and the Lamb of God, was created around 1800.

The two side altars with their shell-work carvings are the work of the Bamberg sculptor Johann Bernhard Klamm from 1767. In the central niches of the marbled wooden structures, there are golden-framed wooden figures, framed by curved and richly carved Rocailles . St. Wendelin stands on the left, flanked by statues of St. Sebastian and St. Rochus , on the right St. Magdalena with St. Francis and St. Anthony of Padua . As excerpts there are curly rocailles frames with putti heads and clouds.

The baroque pulpit is attached to the southern choir arch reveal. It is the work of the Bamberg cabinet maker Martin Walter and was created in 1743/1744 with a marbled wooden structure as a roughly semicircular basket. On the base of the basket there is a cartridge with the designation FBFPL as on the west portal. In addition, there are seated figures of the four evangelists . The underside of the sound cover is decorated with a glory with the Jesus monogram.

The ceiling of the nave is decorated with stucco frames and a ceiling painting that shows the miraculous image of Our Lady of Mariazell . It probably comes from the second half of the 18th century by an unknown artist. The evangelists were originally shown in the four rounded corners.

organ

In 1776, the Bamberg organ builder Georg Ludwig Krämer installed an organ for 500 guilders. At the end of the 19th century, the Landshut organ builder Riederer built a new building with two manuals and a pedal . Renovations took place in 1988, 2002 and 2016, among others.

Bells

Originally the church had three bells. One bell had an unknown date and one bell with a mass of 190 kg and the chime D came from the year 1732. It bore the inscription "I flowed through the fire, Johann Konradth Roth poured me, in Vorchheim 1732". In both world wars it was taken down to be melted down and later returned. After the bell crown broke, it was finally removed in 1997 and placed in the church. The third bell was from 1777.

There have been five bells in the belfry since 1997. The hunting tenant Dieter Gerber donated three bells in 1991 and 1997.
