The St. Engelbert Church is a baroque Catholic church in St. Ingbert and belongs to the parish of Heiliger Ingobertus. Until the construction of the Church of St. Josef in the 1890s, the Engelbertskirche was the parish church of St. Ingbert.

history

The parish of St. Ingbert was first mentioned in 1264. During the Thirty Years' War , the St. Ingbert parish church, which was presumably located at the " Old Cemetery ", was destroyed. In 1661 the noble family von der Leyen took control of St. Ingbert. In the middle of the 18th century a new church was built for the growing community. Imperial Count Friedrich Ferdinand von der Leyen (* 1709; † 1760) was the builder, his wife Countess Maria Charlotte Auguste von Hatzfeldt (* 1715; † 1774) builder of the new parish church of St. Engelbert, which was completed in 1755. It was created according to plans by the builder Friedrich Joachim Stengel . After completion, the church initially wanted to be named after the patron saint of the village, which had 500 inhabitants at the time, " St. Ingobertus ", but the saint was not in the official list of saints because even at that time the existence of a holy Ingobertus could not be considered certain . Ultimately, a compromise was reached and the name of St. Engelbert listed in the directory was chosen .

In the early 1990s, the church was renovated . The building was given a new coat of paint and a new floor. The wood in the chancel was marbled. The confessionals were also marbled.
