history

Previous buildings

Excavation work in the nave of today's church in the mid-1970s revealed shards from the linear ceramicist period (4,500 to 4,000 BC). For the next 5,000 years there will be no traces of human activity in the soil of the church site. There were churches in Euerdorf as early as the 8th and 9th centuries, but it is not certain whether these were located at the location of today's Euerdorf church; possibly these buildings were built on the site of today's Willibrord Chapel at the cemetery.

At the site of today's St. John the Baptist Church , however, there is the grave of a man who died around 950 BC. Was buried in a box-shaped oak coffin. The dead man lay with his head to the west and wore a robe and, as the discovery of a belt buckle suggests, a leather belt. The discovery of another grave nearby suggests the existence of a former cemetery, but not necessarily a church building. The location of the grave of around 950 BC According to those buried along the axis of all later church buildings, the deceased was a man of importance. It is possible that he donated a first church at this point, because shortly after his death, as the discovery of posts shows, a wooden church was built here. Finds of trenches from sill beams embedded in the ground indicate the construction of a second wooden church around the year 1000. Both wooden churches probably did not exist for more than a hundred years.

The first stone church may have been built between 1050 and 1150 and consisted of flat red sandstone . Apparently there was an increase in population, which made it necessary to build a new church in the first half of the 13th century. The western wall of this church building shows signs of fire, which suggest a church fire. All church expansions from this time were made in an easterly direction from the beginning, which suggests a now unknown obstacle in a westerly direction. The archaeological investigations in the mid-1970s revealed numerous grave goods from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The first known documentary mention of a parish church in Euerdorf comes from the year 1389. The poor structural condition of the previous building required the construction of today's Euerdorf Church of St. John the Baptist .

Church building from 1602

The construction of today's Euerdorfer St. John the Baptist Church in post-Gothic forms began, as an inscription above the north portal with the coat of arms of the Würzburg Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn says, in 1602.

As early as 1607, a tower of the church had to be demolished, possibly due to a fire, the choir had to be renewed at five-eighth closing and the nave had to be enlarged. The work was carried out by master mason Peter Mauer from Kitzingen and master carpenter Josef Hepp from Aschach . The community bore the expenditure totaling 2,474 guilders 2 pounds 2 pfennings. The consecration of the church took place on 10 September 1680 by the Würzburg Bishop Stephan Weinberger and Peter Philipp von Dernbach , Prince Bishop of Wurzburg and Bamberg . The main altar was dedicated to John the Baptist and contained the relics of several saints; the second altar was dedicated to St. Sebastian and the third altar dedicated to the Mother of God .

In 1723 took place after major renovation work the blessing of the church.

In 1762 the mayor of Euerdorf and the judges criticized Pastor Ament for "not having the church windows made". This referred to the jurisdiction of the mayor and to the fact that the windows had already been renewed in 1737 and 1752. Finally, in 1765, the Ordinariat of Würzburg commissioned the bailiff zu Aura-Trimberg to repair the church windows.

The high altar , which had been completed seven years earlier, was also taken in 1765 . A benefactor, who wanted to remain anonymous, had made the funding possible and made it a condition that the name of the Virgin Mary be placed on the altar. The place where the coat of arms of the high-counts Stadion family, whose grave was at the entrance to the parish church, was placed is unknown.

Cost estimates for a version of the pulpit requested by Pastor Anton Göll (1780–1787) were only available in 1790 .; the decree with approval from Würzburg followed in 1798. In 1792, financed by benefactors, the Way of the Cross was painted. In 1804 a new tabernacle was purchased for 35 Reichstaler .

In 1796 Pastor Loskant successfully objected to Frau Hofkammerratin Sauer's request to have the tombstone of her husband, who was buried in the parish church in September 1796, replaced with a larger epitaph on the wall next to the altar of Our Lady. The alternative request of court chamber councilor Sauer to have a small stone crucifix set up in the church was granted.

Fire of 1872

On September 15, 1872, the church building fell victim to a fire that destroyed the roof of the nave and the church tower. The technician of the Kgl. District building authority Hammelburg, Assessor Cämmerer, led the reconstruction of the church, in which various Euerdorfer craftsmen were involved. The church expansion he was considering was rejected by the Euerdorf congregation because it saw no need for it. Bell founder Klaus von Heidingsfeld charged 4,834 guilders for the four new bells that were supposed to replace the five burnt bells , of which the fire insurance only took 700 guilders. The parish and church administration graciously asked the king for 20 to 25 liters of cannon metal. The new building of the church cost a total of 80,000 guilders; The repayment of the loan granted by the state fire insurance institution lasted until March 25, 1922.

The organ

The altar and the pulpit were made by the Kissinger sculptor Michael Arnold ; More precise details about the award of the contract are not known in the parish archive of Euerdorf. The altar shows the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist ; on his sides are St. Willibrord , Katharina, Barbara and Christophorus from the left . It is the only known and still preserved altar by Michael Arnold; it was also left unchanged during the church renovation carried out from 1974 to 1977. The left side altar is a Marian altar , while the right side altar is dedicated to the Holy Cross .

On April 18, 1873, the new building was inaugurated by Bishop Franz Josef. In 1875 an organ built by the Würzburg company Schlimbach & Sohn was installed.

Twentieth Century and Present

In 1942 the four bells had to be delivered to the church as part of the Second World War .

In July 1962, a new bell cage and a new electric bell machine were installed; in 1966/67 an electric church clock followed. In May 1973, measures began to expand the church. In 1974 fundamental redesigning measures were tackled again, which came to an end with the inauguration on June 19, 1977 by Bishop Josef Stangl .

On May 18, 1952, four new bells cast by the Erdinger company Czudnochowski were consecrated to replace the church bells delivered during World War II . On June 28, 1987, two more bells were consecrated, which had been manufactured by the Bachert brothers from Bad Friedrichshall . The ringing now has five bells, which presumably sound in the tones d ″, c ″, a ′, g ′ and e ′. However, the whereabouts of one of the four bells from 1952 is unclear. The only plan was to purchase a bell with the sound e ′ at a later date.

From September 1974 to February 8, 1975, an archaeological investigation was carried out in the nave of the church at the suggestion of district home keeper Josef Wabra on behalf of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation, Franconian branch of the Department of Prehistory. The investigation produced numerous archaeological findings about the early history at the location of the church.

Between 1974 and 1977 the nave was completely rebuilt in its present form. It has a gable roof that is visible from the inside and is cut into by transverse gables on the side windows. The choir was preserved.

After a general overhaul of the organ, it was consecrated on June 3, 2007 by Auxiliary Bishop Helmut Bauer .
