St. Mary's Immaculate Conception was the Roman Catholic parish church in the Pier district of the municipality of Inden in the Düren district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The Vilvenich branch with the Helena Chapel , Haus Verken and Pommenich also belonged to the parish of Pier .

location

The parish church was in the center of Pier on a slightly elevated position on the market and was surrounded by a wall. Hüttenstrasse, Gracht Strasse and Markt met in front of the church. A few meters from the west side of the church ran an alley from Hüttenstrasse to Zur Löv, which ran north of the church.

history

In 922 a church in Pier was mentioned for the first time. In 1318, the Archbishop of Cologne, Heinrich II of Virneburg, incorporated the church into the collegiate churches of St. Margareta in Gerresheim and St. Ursula in Cologne . They had held the patronage since 922. Since 1387 the Duke of Jülich exercised the patronage . In 1804 the branches of the parish Pier Luchem , Merken , Schophoven , Jüngersdorf and Stütgerloch were spun off. In 1806 the then independent parish of Bonsdorf (merged with Pier) came as a branch to the parish of Pier. In 1844 the Bonsdorf Church, which was dedicated to St. Ursula von Köln was consecrated, demolished.

The church and the parish had only been named St. Mary's Immaculate Conception since around 1850. Previously the church was dedicated to St. Martin of Tours , which suggests that the church and parish are very old.

Due to the relocation of the village and the associated demolition of the church, the parish , which is now around 1000 years old , was dissolved on January 1st, 2009. The fortune went to the parish of Langerwehe , as the new chapel was also built there. In the meantime, the entire area of the former parish has been excavated by open-cast lignite mining.

Building history

A small wooden church already existed in Pier in the 7th century . This was replaced in the 10th or 11th century by a small stone church in Romanesque forms . In the 12th century, a side aisle, bell tower and a semicircular apse were added . In 1822 the nave was demolished due to its dilapidation.

As a replacement, a new church in the classicist style was built at the same location between 1824 and 1825 , including the Romanesque bell tower. The church was rebuilt in neo-Gothic form as early as 1892 . Except for a few remains of the wall, this church was destroyed in the Second World War .

From 1955 to 1957, a new church, including the remains of walls of the old church to designs by the architect Paul Rheydter Bernert been built, which on 15 August 1959 consecrated was. This church was profaned on May 18, 2008 and demolished in February 2012. Like the entire village of Pier, the parish church had to give way to the approaching opencast mine in Inden .

Building description

St. Mary's Immaculate Conception was a single-nave brick hall with the chancel to the north. The old choir in the east served as a confessional chapel. The west wall was shaped by a large round rose window. Below was the main portal. The bell tower stood on the southwest side.

Furnishing

The church had modern equipment. The altar cross was a work of gold and enamel with a crucifix made of ivory . It was created by Hubertus Förster from Aachen in 1959. The tabernacle from 1958 was also created by Hubertus Förster together with Fritz Schwerdt from sheet silver and precious stones. The artist Heribert Reul from Kevelaer created a painting in sgraffito in 1956 with a representation of the 4 evangelists.

The historical furnishings from the previous churches included a Pietà from 1520, a statue of Mary and John also from 1520, a crucifixion group from 1780 and a crucifix from the 16th century.

The stained glass windows were works by Paul Franz Bonnekamp from 1955 and 1964. They were destroyed when it was demolished in 2012.
