St. Mary

The Protestant St. Mary's Church is a Grade II listed aisled hall church in the district Sooden the municipality of Bad Sooden-Allendorf in Werra-Meissner of the country Hessen .

history

The assertion of the Sooden pastor Johannes Rhenanus , who is buried in the church, that the church was consecrated by Boniface cannot be substantiated and is probably due to the special veneration that Boniface enjoyed in Sooden. It is rather to be assumed that the Marienkirche was founded as a branch church of St. Crucis of the city of Allendorf. In 1637, during the Thirty Years' War , Croatians of the imperial troops marched through the Werra Valley and laid Allendorf to rubble and ashes. Sooden and its Marienkirche also fell victim to the conflagration. The outer walls of the church remained in place. It is not known exactly when the reconstruction of the church began with the financial support of Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Kassel . What is certain, however, is that services soon took place again and that the altar was rebuilt from 1653 onwards.

Building description

Look at the choir

In 1694 the church was given its current single-nave shape. The previous building was made of roughly hewn field stones or house stones . It is not certain whether the originally Gothic hall church from the 15th century had two naves , but it can be assumed from the width of the room. Then it probably also had a ribbed vault that rested on pillars in the central aisle and on consoles on the walls. Today there is a coffered ceiling under the gable roof . In 1699 the work was completed with the construction of a new choir facing the mountain, ie on the west side, with a Gothic choir and a baroque bell tower above it . Above the first floor of the tower, which ends with a frieze , there are two more floors, also separated by a frieze. The octagonal bell storey rises above it and is crowned with a French dome . In the belfry one of the oldest bells in the Werra, which was cast in 1405 depends. The keystone of the ribbed vault in the choir bears the landgrave's initials: "LC 1699 - Cujus nomen sit in benedictione". The coat of arms of Landgrave Karl and that of his wife Amalia von Courland are emblazoned above the main portal of the church .

Furnishing

On the left side of the triumphal arch is the pulpit made of cherry and walnut wood with inlays , it was made in 1702. In the sound cover are the words: "Stop preaching the wordt". The three right, front rows of the church stalls are provided with carved doors. Here the saltworks officials had their reserved seats.

window

The colorful church window in the center of the choir was designed by Hilde Ferber in 1955 . It replaced a 19th century window with geometric shapes. The new window shows the history of salvation from the fall of man to the last judgment .

The Last Judgment
The empty tomb - the confirmation of Jesus by God
The baptism of Jesus in the Jordan Death of Jesus on the cross - for the salvation of people
The announcement of the birth of Jesus to Mary The birth of Jesus
The fall of man The expulsion from paradise

The rose windows in the top of the pointed arched windows of the nave were not installed until the 19th century. The rose windows on the right are determined by faith in Christ and the Holy Spirit . The first rose window shows the Christ monogram "Jesus hominum salvator". The second rose window shows a Christ monogram with the letters "Chi and Rho". The symbol of the dove of the Holy Spirit can be seen on the third rose window above the side door . The fourth rose window on this side of the wall shows an angel. On the left side of the organ there is a picture of a fish, headed with the Latin word »Deo volente«. An anchor, a cross and a heart can be seen in the rose window to the right of the organ. The close connection between St. Mary's Church and the community is expressed on the three rose windows on the south wall. The first rose window shows Sooden's red coat of arms and the Berlaph and pan hooks used in salt extraction. The year 1554 commemorates the award of the coat of arms to the saltworks "in the Soden". The second rose window is a foundation of the craftsmen's support association, the third one of the men's choir from 1886.
