history

Machtsum belonged to the archdeaconate of Borsum, later the deaconate of Borsum. The chapel , donated and built by Domvikar Alexius in 1301 , was probably renewed twice after fires and war events. Initially the Hildesheim cathedral chapter had the right of patronage , later it was transferred to the Archdiaconate Borsum. Presumably the chapel, which was in a slightly elevated position in the middle of the village and had a roof turret, had St. Nicholas as its patron saint . Even after the Reformation , Machtsum remained Catholic. In 1896 the chapel was demolished and the pews were sold.

Also in 1896 the foundation stone for today's church was laid on the northern outskirts of Machtsum, and from that year on, Catholic church records were kept in Machtsum . From the autumn of 1896 on, Machtsum had Clemens Coers, the first local priest ; before that, Machtsum was cared for by clergymen from Borsum. On 8 November 1896, the newly built church through was Bishop Daniel Wilhelm Sommerwerck consecrated , their construction costs amounted to around 36,000 Mark and were applied by the Machtsumer population. The statues of St. Nicholas, Simon Peter and Paul of Tarsus as well as a crucifix were taken from the previous chapel . Demolition material from the old chapel was also used in the construction of the new church. In the same year, Machtsum also became an independent parish.

The cemetery has existed next to the church since 1899, before the deceased from Machtsum were buried in Borsum. Also in 1899, a court owner donated the statue of Saint Joseph of Nazareth and the chandelier to the church . From March to May 1900 the organ was built by the organ builder P. Furtwängler & Hammer from Hanover . In 1909 the parsonage was built from the community's own resources ; In 1910 the first pastor , who previously lived in an abandoned courtyard in the center of the village, moved there. On October 1, 1925, the parish of Machtsum was re-pared from Borsum to Hüddessum .

As a result of the Second World War , the number of Catholics in Machtsum rose due to the influx of displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire . In 1965 the church was renovated and its interior redesigned, the communion bench , the side altar and the pulpit were removed. The chandelier and the previous Eternal Light were also removed, but these furnishings were returned to the church in 1996. On July 2, 1966, the newly renovated church and an altar that had been renewed in accordance with the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council was consecrated by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen . In 1977 the roof got a new covering, in 1978 the deaneries of Borsum and Dinklar were merged to form the deanery of Borsum-Dinklar. On December 6, 1979, the previous curate community was elevated to a parish. In 1986 the crowning of the tower and the cross were renewed, and since 1993 there has been no local priest.

On December 1, 2002, the Borsum-Dinklar deanery was merged into the then newly founded Borsum-Sarstedt deanery. Since 2008 the maintenance of the church has been carried out by the Friends of St. Nikolaus Machtsum e. V. supports. Since November 1, 2014, the church has belonged to the parish of St. Martinus, which, in addition to the churches of St. Martinus in Borsum and St. Nikolaus in Machtsum, also includes the churches and St. Georg in Adlum , St. Bernward in Hönnersum and St. Matthias belong in Hüddessum. The parish of St. Nikolaus in Machtsum was abolished in this context. In previous years, these churches had already formed the Borsumer Kaspel pastoral care unit . Information about the history of the church can also be found in the local history museum in Borsum.

The east-facing, single-nave quarry stone church was built according to plans by Richard Herzig in the neo-Romanesque style and is 84 meters above sea level . Above the entrance portal there is a relief depicting the Lamb of God with the flag of victory , above it is a statue of St. Nicholas in a niche in the wall.

In the anteroom of the church two reliefs show scenes from the Old Testament , the sacrifice of Isaac and Melchizedek . The nave offers 154 seats and is closed off by a flat painted wooden ceiling. Under the organ gallery are the confessional and a picture of the Holy Family , on which God the Father and a dove as a symbol for the Holy Spirit are depicted. The organ built by P. Furtwängler & Hammer was put back into service on Palm Sunday 2015 after a restoration by the organ building workshop Florian Fay from Braunschweig .

The statues on the side walls represent Saints Anthony of Padua , Boniface , Elisabeth of Thuringia and Joseph of Nazareth, and a crescent moon Madonna and a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus are also located there. 14 pictures of the Stations of the Cross also hang on the side walls. To the left and right of the chancel there is a crucifixion group with the four evangelist symbols attached to the ends of the bars . Furthermore, the baptismal font and a Pietà , in front of which sacrificial candles can be placed. The statues of Saints Peter and Paul are arranged in the chancel, and the 30-burner chandelier hangs above the altar . The altar and tabernacle are modern in design. The ceiling painting in the apse shows Jesus Christ on the throne , an open book with the letters Alpha and Omega (Α and Ω), the first and the last letter of the classical Greek alphabet, in his hand. They are a symbol for the beginning and the end, thus for the comprehensive, for God . An angel and Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of the church, are depicted to the left and right of Jesus .

On the southern outer wall of the church, a war memorial commemorates the 17 and 42 fallen of the First and Second World Wars . The rectory has since been sold to private.
