history

Before the construction of the St. Bernward Church there was already the Oswald Chapel in Hönnersum, the exact time of its creation and its appearance is no longer known today. The patron saint Oswald , an Anglo-Saxon king living in the 7th century , suggests that this chapel is very old . The chapel stood next to the former school, it was a half-timbered chapel with a barrel vault on a field stone foundation. It was first mentioned in 1585. It belonged to the main church in Borsum, to the archdeaconate of Borsum, and since 1746 to the deanery of Borsum. Even after the Reformation , the population of Hönnersum remained almost without exception Catholic.

In 1814/15, next to the Oswald Chapel, the school, which existed until 1974, was built, a half-timbered building initially with a classroom, which was expanded to include a second classroom after the Second World War . The children from Hönnersum had previously attended school in Borsum.

From 1861, the year he was ordained a priest , until his death in 1871 at the age of 42, Heinrich Aue (* 1829), after whom the street leading past the church is named, was the first local priest to work in Hönnersum. In 1864, when Hönnersum had 245 inhabitants, construction of the St. Bernward Church began. It was made possible by generous donations from the residents of Hönnersum. Heinrich Aue donated his entire fortune to the building of the church. In this context, the St. Oswald Chapel was demolished; the Oswaldplatz still reminds of the former chapel in Hönnersum. On December 29, 1865, the curative community of Hönnersum became an independent parish. On May 13, 1866, followed consecration of St. Bernward Church by Bishop Eduard Jakob Wedekin , as of this year also were in Hönnersum church records out. Second patron of the church was Oswald, the patron saint of the previous chapel. The first pastor of the church was Heinrich Aue, who was promoted from chaplain to pastor in 1866 . In 1871 the first organ was installed. Around 1873, under Joseph Graen, the second pastor of Hönnersum, the rectory was built at today's Heinrich-Aue-Strasse 25.

In 1942, due to the war, the bells were removed for military purposes, and in 1948 they were replaced by three new bells. After Hönnersum had only around 400 inhabitants in 1939, their number had risen to 721 in 1950 due to the influx of displaced persons as a result of the Second World War. In 1965/66 the interior of the church was redesigned and, in accordance with the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council, a popular altar was installed , which was consecrated on May 30, 1966 on the occasion of the church's 100th anniversary. The cemetery chapel was built in 1984/85 and the parish hall was consecrated in 1998.

Since December 1, 2002, the church has belonged to the then newly founded deanery Borsum-Sarstedt, previously it belonged to the deanery Borsum-Dinklar. Since November 1, 2014, the church has belonged to the parish of St. Martinus, which, in addition to the churches of St. Martinus in Borsum and St. Bernward in Hönnersum, also includes the churches of St. Georg in Adlum , St. Matthias in Hüddessum and St. Nikolaus in Machtsum belong. The parish of St. Bernward in Hönnersum was abolished in this context. In previous years, these churches had already formed the Borsumer Kaspel pastoral care unit .

The east-facing church, a three - aisled neo - Gothic building with a west tower, is almost 92 meters above sea level . It was designed by the Cologne master builder Vincenz Statz and offers around 128 seats. Above the entrance portal, a relief shows Mary with the baby Jesus , flanked by two angels . An oculus is embedded above it . A chalice with a host in a halo is depicted on the entrance doors as a symbol for the Eucharist . The central nave is spanned by a ribbed vault, the two side aisles by a barrel vault, supported by four black marble columns on octagonal bases. The interior is illuminated by modern, pointed arch-shaped stained glass windows . The three choir windows from 1966 were designed by Paul König (* 1932) from Hildesheim and show symbols of the Trinity .

A triumphal cross made of linden wood hangs in the chancel, and the four symbols of the evangelists are attached to the ends of its cross beams . On the side of the chancel, two paintings by the painter Friedrich Eltermann from 1893 show scenes from the life and death of Bernwards. The high altar is crowned by a crucifixion group , below which the three divine persons are depicted above the tabernacle . The base of today's popular altar made of sandstone is decorated with a depiction of the Lord's Supper .

The two side altars , also made of sandstone, are dedicated to Mary and Joseph . On the Altar of Mary the statue of Mary is framed by two angel reliefs, on the Joseph Altar reliefs on the left and right show the Holy Family and the death of Joseph. There are 14 stations of the Cross on the side walls of the nave , and a confessional is set into the south wall. The baptistery is located under the organ gallery. There is also a mission cross , which commemorates the six people's missions from 1895 to 1987. The organ was renewed in 1982 by the organ builder Manfred Gaulke from Hüddessum.

In addition to the St. Bernward Church and the cemetery chapel, there has also been a statue of the Virgin Mary in the cemetery since 1956. The 1.30 meter high figure comes from the Belgian pilgrimage site of Banneux . The names of those killed and missing from the two world wars are engraved beneath the statue .

In Hönnersum and the surrounding Feldmark, there are four processional crosses at the exits of the village, which are stations of the Corpus Christi procession , as well as three field crosses .
