The Roman Catholic branch church of St. Nikolaus in Unkofen , a district of the municipality of Hohenthann in the Lower Bavarian district of Landshut , is a small hall church from the first half of the 18th century, which is furnished in the style of the rural Baroque . As the wall thickness and shape of the floor plan suggest, the enclosing walls of the nave and choir go back to a Romanesque predecessor from the first half of the 13th century. The tower , on the other hand, was added later.

The church consecrated to St. Nicholas of Myra (Memorial Day: December 6th) is a branch church of the parish of St. Laurentius in Hohenthann. It is registered as a monument with the number D-2-74-141-38 at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation .

description

The branch church of St. Nicholas is a single-aisled , east-facing complex that looks rather inconspicuous from the outside. The retracted apse , which dates back to the Romanesque style, has the shape of a stilted round arch and has a small round window on each side. The sacristy is attached directly to the apex of the choir . The tower, on the other hand, is designed as a so-called choir flank tower, which is inserted on the north side in the angle between the apse and the nave. From the outside, apart from a surrounding cornice, it is not structured at about half the height and has two simple sound openings on each side. A kind of pyramid helmet with a tower ball and patriarchal cross forms the upper end . The saddle-roofed nave has two window axes and receives its light only through two arched windows of different sizes on the south side. A small porch containing the church portal is added on the west side .

Inside, a baroque, profiled cornice extends at a great height along the surrounding walls of the chancel. While the nave has a flat ceiling , the semicircular apse is spanned like a dome. A wooden gallery has been inserted in the rear nave yoke . The high altar from around 1780 is a work of the late Rococo . The altar structure is supported by four marbled columns that taper towards the top and have gilded capitals . The altar sheet shows a representation of the church patron Nicholas. There are several gilded vases on the entablature; Volutes soar to the altarpiece . There are figures of John the Baptist (left) and the Evangelist John (right) above the side passages . The side altars were created around 1730, but have been modernized. Instead of the altar leaves, there are almost life-size figures on consoles today .
