St. Petri Church on the Horst

The Romanesque church of St. Petri stands on the Horst in Burweg in the Lower Saxony district of Stade . It was built in the course of the elder colonization around 1200 on a sand ridge in the marshland of the Oste . It belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran parish Horst in Burweg / Großenwörden in the church district Stade .

Building history

In 1106 the Archbishop of Bremen allowed Dutch colonists who were supposed to reclaim the Eastern marshland to build churches .

Choir room

The field stone church on the Horst was built by the Dutch in the period 1150/1250 in the Romanesque style. It is consecrated to Saint Peter , the patron saint of fishermen and boatmen. Presumably there was a chapel at that point . The foundation is made of brick , the western-facing bell tower is made of wood.

From 1556 the church was Lutheran . In the course of the Thirty Years War , the tower, furnishings and windows were destroyed in 1632. After the looting, the church was renovated in 1699. In 1797 the current church tower was built. In 1892 the roof was changed due to the statics. The current gallery with organ was built in. In 1910 the church received a new bell from Hildesheim , the old one came to the Lüneburg Museum in 1912 .

In 1933 the church received new choir windows on the occasion of the Luther anniversary, in 1959 renovation work took place again. The old font was returned to the church in 1975.

Choir window and main portal

Main portal

Today 's choir windows showing Luther's theses and the distribution of the Lord's Supper were installed on the occasion of Luther's anniversary in 1933.

The main portal was donated by Anna Hintelmann after the Thirty Years War in 1699 to commemorate her deceased husband. The door inscription reminds of this.

Old tombstones on the church

The churchyard was closed in 1885 when the new cemetery was opened at the entrance to the village. Nevertheless, a total of 42 tombs have been preserved around the church today.
