The Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft , or Stifterverband for short, is a non-profit, registered association with its headquarters in Essen and a large capital city office in Berlin . His areas of work are education, science and innovation. According to his own statements, he has set himself the task of identifying and solving structural problems in science and universities . As an organization, the Stifterverband Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft analyzes, advises, promotes and networks. In addition, the Stifterverband, together with the German Foundation Center, is currently the trustee for around 670 mostly science-promoting foundations. The Stifterverband was founded in 1920 as the "Stifterverband der Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft ".

Prices

In close cooperation with the various German research organizations, the Stifterverband awards prize money for successful research work that is considered particularly worthy of support. Together with the German Research Foundation, the Stifterverband awards the Communicator Prize . This personal award is endowed with 50,000 euros and is awarded to scientists from all disciplines who communicate the results of their scientific work and those of their subject in an outstanding manner to the media and the non-scientific public. Together with the Helmholtz Association , the Erwin Schrödinger Prize for interdisciplinary research has been awarded annually since 1999. The Science Prize: Research between Basics and Applications (with the Max Planck Society) has been awarded since 1998 . The Fraunhofer Society for the Promotion of Applied Research and the Leibniz Association (“ Science Prize: Society Needs Science ”) each have their own corresponding science award, the selection of which is made by the internal committees of the scientific societies independently. Together with the German Rectors' Conference , the Ars legendi Prize has been awarded for excellent university teaching since 2006 . Together with the Leopoldina , the Stifterverband has been awarding the Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker Prize every two years since 2009. The Stifterverband has been the office of the German Future Prize since 1997 . This takes care of the procurement of the necessary funds for the awarding of the award, the supervision of the committees, the organization of the selection process and the award ceremony.

From 1970 to 1979 the Stifterverband awarded a special prize at the annual Adolf Grimme Prize .

Research summit

The Stifterverband has been organizing the "Research Summit" in Berlin once a year since 2015 (together with the Leopoldina and the Expert Commission on Research and Innovation ). At the research summit, around 400 experts from science, business, politics and civil society discuss central topics of research and innovation policy in Germany.

"City of Science" award

In order to motivate cities and urban regions to do more and more research in the field of science, the Stifterverband announced the City of Science Prize from 2004 to 2013 . Particular emphasis was placed on regions in which science is linked to business and culture. The fact that science is perceived by the public also played an important role.

The award received so far:

In the 2013 final round, ten projects in Bielefeld , Braunschweig, Bremen, Bremerhaven, Dresden, Kaiserslautern , Karlsruhe , Münster , Regensburg and Rostock were selected from 50 applicants - including from cities that have already won a round . Finally, Münster received the audience award for the project “Münster's Originals”, which included various events on the subject of science and university studies.
