The Roman Catholic parish church Voitsberg is in the municipality of Voitsberg in western Styria . Its history goes back to the end of the 13th century, with today's church building dating from the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century. The church, consecrated to St. Joseph of Nazareth , belongs to the Voitsberg deanery in the Graz-Seckau diocese . The church building is under monument protection .

Location

The church is to the west of the main square, outside the old town of the municipality of Voitsberg, at Conrad-von-Hötzendorf-Straße 25.

history

At the site of today's church there was originally a chapel of the hospital, first mentioned in 1299 , consecrated to Saint Elisabeth . For the years 1395 and 1426 church consecrations are documented, which mention a new church building, although it remains unclear whether it was this or the chapel of the citizens' hospital. In 1395 the chapel went to the newly founded Carmelite monastery as a monastery church . A side chapel consecrated to St. Mary with the graves of the monastery founders is occupied for the 15th century , which was replaced in 1690 by the construction of the Loretto Chapel. The crypt , which is still preserved today, served as for the monks from 1680 and is now below the sacristy .

The current church was built between 1690 and 1708, probably under the master builder Bartholomäus Ebner , and was not structurally connected to the actual monastery until 1739. In 1765 the grave stone of the monastery donors was moved to the Loretto Chapel. The monastery was closed in 1812 and since 1816 the former monastery church has been the parish church of Voitsberg. In the years 1856 and 1860 the first renovation work took place inside the church, whereby the pews were also replaced. In 1869 the roof turret was renovated and in 1888 the entire interior was completely renovated under the direction of the architect August Ortwein . In 1908, 1958/1959 and 1984/85, renewed restoration work took place on the interior and in 2001 the crypt was renovated.

description

Outdoor area

The outer wall with the two gravestones and the figurative representation

The church has a cruciform floor plan and a hipped roof . On the roof there is a ridge turret with an onion and a lantern . The outer wall is structured by plaster pilasters. There is a building inscription from 1701 above the northern entrance. On the outer wall there is a depiction of kneeling figures in front of a cross, the figural tombstone of Baron Gall von Ragkniz, who died in 1557, which shows him in armor, and the tombstone of Rudolf von, who died in 1679 Wagensperg.

inner space

The relatively high and narrow church interior shows a groin vault with belts and surrounding cornices resting on stepped pillars with strong capitals . Chapel rooms with galleries are attached to the four-bay nave to the side of the eastern bay . The one-yoke choir has a straight end. The Loretto Chapel was added to the north of the nave. The brick-built, three-axis gallery in the western part of the nave rests on rectangular pillars and has a parapet grille carved in the Rococo style in the third quarter of the 18th century .

High altar

The high altar, which can be dated to the year 1711 using a chronogram, fills the entire end of the choir and is attributed to Marx Schokotnigg . A total of six columns carry the heavenly glory with recessed round windows, the two of which are rotated next to the altar leaf. In front of the round window flanked with angel figures is a dove figure, which is supposed to represent the Holy Spirit . The altar leaf, surrounded by a canopy, shows the death of Saint Joseph and was drawn by Franz Carl Rempp . On both sides of the altarpiece there are two statues each depicting Saint Teresa of Ávila , Elijah , Elisäus and Maria Magdalena von Pazzi . In 1888 the high altar was re-gilded by Wilhelm Sirach . The free-standing tabernacle was erected in 1858 and shows a scene with the Emmaus disciples on the exhibition doors . The canteen of the high altar was set up in 1908 by the Grein stonemason company.

Side and niche altars

The Marian altar in the north side chapel was consecrated to St. Mary of Mount Carmel in 1708 . In 1888 the altar structure was redesigned by August Ortwein . The present-day altarpiece and the portrait in the altar extension , which show Mary of the Perpetual Help and the Heart of Mary , date from the same year . On the altar is a statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague made in the 18th century . There are also two figures of Saints Barbara and Walburga on the altar, which were brought here from the Margarethenkirche in 1890 . The cross altar in the south side chapel was erected in 1709 and bears a crucifix from the third quarter of the 17th century and two statues of St. Mary and St. John . The altar extract and the cafeteria were revised and redesigned by August Ortwein in 1888. The picture of the Sacred Heart in the altar extract comes from that time. There is also a relic of St. Pancras that was brought here in 1893 on the altar. Both side altars are connected to the high altar by a communion grate made of wood in the first third of the 18th century .

The Kredenzaltar was 1708, the Holy Elisabet ordained, but was from 1812 just more than Mariazell altar called. In 1958, the high altar painting of St. Margaret from the Margaret Church was brought here. In the altar extract there is a portrait of the so-called Klagenfurt Head of Sorrows. On the altar there are two figures of Saints Rochus and Sebastian , which date from the beginning of the 18th century and were brought here from St. Michael's Church in 1893 . Before 1945, a picture of St. Anastasius, probably painted in 1669, was placed on the cafeteria of the altar. The Anne altar on the north wall of the church was consecrated in 1708 and bears a portrait of Saint Anne painted around 1760 . He also carries two figures depicting two unnamed saints of the Carmelite Order . The family altar, also consecrated in 1708, is located opposite the Anna Altar and is dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene von Pazzi . The altarpiece painted around 1760 shows the Holy Family . As on the St. Anne's Altar, there are also two figures of unknown Carmelite saints on the family altar. Today's passage from the sacristy to the transept used to serve as the Anastasius Chapel. The altar, consecrated in 1708, is still there today. Instead of the altarpiece, he carries the bones of St. Mark , which the monks are said to have brought to Voitsberg in 1399 for the foundation of the monastery. The cafeteria of the altar is said to come from the old Elisabeth chapel. Opposite is a portrait of the Mount of Olives .

The church also contains the remains of a late Gothic winged altar from around 1520, which was brought here from the Heiligenblutkirche and restored in 1951/52. Its stunned reliefs show depictions of the apostles on the wings and the Holy Trinity in the shrine .

pulpit

The pulpit was taken in 1732 by Hans Michael Schmidt and decorated with Rococo style ornaments between 1760 and 1770 . On the pulpit there are representations of the church fathers Augustine of Hippo , Ambrosius of Milan , Gregory the Great and Jerome . In the place of the simple cross there was a statue of Saint Angelus until 1908 .

The oratorio grille and the prospectus of the organs installed by Konrad Hopferwieser senior in 1902 are also in rococo style. The interior of the north and south portal of the church has a carved frame from the beginning of the 18th century. A total of seven paintings from around 1760 to 1770, which show the life of Saint Joseph, hang on the pillars. Two simultaneous pictures of Saints Albertus and Johannes Nepomuk hang on the organ gallery . The baroque pews, like the uniform furnishings in the sacristy, date from the beginning of the 18th century. The tombstone of the founder of the monastery, Friedrich von Hanau, who died in 1413, and his daughter Anna von Laun, who died in 1424, was probably made of red marble in Salzburg and shows several wild men wearing helmets and coats of arms with a knight's covenant between the zimier . In 1765, the tombstone was decorated with a richly carved curtain and a statue of Chronos and a mourning woman, and it was furnished as a priority seat. The tombs of Franz Anton Adolph von Wagensperg, who died in 1723, and Rudolph von Wagensperg, who died in 1734 , can also be found in the church.
