The Stena Scandinavica is a ferry for the transport of vehicles and passengers ( RoPax ). It was built in South Korea for the Stena Line , entered service as the Stena Britannica II in 2002 and renamed the Stena Britannica in 2003. In 2007 it was extended in Germany at Lloyd Werft and was then for a short time the largest RoPax ferry in the world. In 2010 it was first renamed Britannica , a little later Stena Scandinavica IV and finally Stena Scandinavica . Since 2011, the Stena Scandinavica has been in service with the Stena Germanica on the Kiel – Gothenburg route , where it replaced the previous ferry of the same name .

Construction in South Korea and use in the English Channel

The ferry with the IMO number 9235517 was like her sister ship Stena Adventurer , 2002 by the construction shipyard taken Hyundai Heavy Industries, Ulsan, South Korea under the hull number 1392 in order. The delivery of the Stena Britannica II took place on January 7, 2003, it came under the flag of Great Britain with home port Harwich in service, like the Stena Hollandica , also used on the route , the later Stena Germanica . . The ship was put into service on February 25, 2003 on the Hoek van Holland - Harwich route , replacing the previous Stena Britannica . With a length of 211.6 m, a width of 29.9 m and a draft of 6.3 m, the measurement was 43,500 GT. The load capacity was 10,670 tdw, 3,400 m were given as loading meters and there was space for 900 passengers in the cabins.

On March 17, 2003, the ship was renamed Stena Britannica and christened on March 28, 2003 in Harwich.

The ship is propelled by four diesel engines with nine cylinders each from MAN B&W of the type 9L40 / 54 with 6,480 kW each at 500 revolutions per minute. The total output of around 26,000 kW from the four engines acts on two gearboxes and drives two propellers . The ship can thus reach a speed of around 22  knots . Two shaft generators with 2,400 kW each and four MAN B&W diesel generators of type 8L23 / 30H with 1,200 kW each are available for on-board power supply. For better maneuverability, the ship was equipped with special rudder systems and two 2,200 kW bow thrusters .

Conversion in Germany at the Lloyd shipyard

At the Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven, the ship was extended in the relatively short time from January 20 to March 9, 2007. To do this, the ship was cut apart in the floating dock and the stern was floated out. Then the already prefabricated 30 m long and 29.9 m wide midship section and then the aft section were floated in again. The parts were then welded together, the cables and pipelines reconnected and the corresponding work carried out in the affected interior. In the new midship section there were new cabins, new restaurants, bars and the necessary infrastructure. During the shipyard period, the other existing cabins, restaurants and the leisure area with shopping and entertainment options were also modernized and adapted to the new standard.

With a length of around 240 m, a width of 29.9 m and a draft of 6.2 m, a new measurement of 57,639 GT resulted. The increased load capacity is 17,200 tdw, the loading meter was specified as 4,100 m and there was now space for 1,300 passengers in the cabins. With this measurement of the gross tonnage, the then Stena Britannica was considered the largest RoPax ferry in the world.

Use in the Scandinavian service

In 2010 the Stena Scandinavica in service Hoek van Holland - Harwich was replaced by the second of the two new super ferries built at the Nordic Yards shipyard in Wismar , the Stena Britannica III , which was christened with the traditional name Stena Britannica . This has a measurement of 64,039 GT.

The Stena Britannica was initially renamed Britannica in September 2010 . She was overhauled and modernized from October 2010 in the Polish shipyard Remontowa and received a new deck with an additional 100 cabins. In April 2011 it was renamed Stena Scandinavica IV and replaced today's Stena Spirit and has been sailing alongside the Stena Germanica under the Swedish flag and with its home port Gothenburg on the Gothenburg - Kiel route since April 19, 2011 . In May 2011 it was renamed Stena Scandinavica .

In November 2015, the ship suffered damage to the drive shaft, which is why the speed had to be reduced. The ship was therefore withdrawn from the route from November 25 to December 4, 2015 and brought to Naantali for repairs . From November 27 to December 4, the Stena Gothica replaced the Stena Scandinavica . Since the required spare parts could not be procured in time, the timetable was changed for the time being, a crossing now takes almost 3 hours longer. Another shipyard period took place from January 12 to 21, 2016 at Remontowa in Gdansk .

From January to February 2018, the ship received scrubbers at Remontowa in Gdansk and was replaced by the Caroline Russ .
