Stephen Mark "Steve" Konroyd (born February 10, 1961 in Scarborough , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The defender played a total of over 900 games in the National Hockey League , most of them for the Calgary Flames , the New York Islanders and the Chicago Blackhawks . With the Canadian national team , he won the silver medal at the world championships in 1985 and 1991 . He has been working as a TV expert since the end of his career.

Career

Steve Konroyd was born in Scarborough and played in his youth for the Markham Waxers , among others , before playing for the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League (OMJHL) at the beginning of the 1978/79 season. In 1980 he was honored by the OMJHL with the Bobby Smith Trophy for his athletic and academic achievements, before the Calgary Flames selected him in 39th position in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft . For the Flames, the Canadian made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL), but after four games he was sent back to the junior league, which is now known as the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). There the defender achieved by far his best personal statistics with 68 points in 59 games in the 1980/81 season and was consequently elected to the OHL Second All-Star Team .

Apart from a brief stint in the 1981/82 season with the Oklahoma City Stars , the farm team of the Calgary Flames, in the Central Hockey League , Konroyd quickly established himself in the Flames' NHL squad and played over 400 games in the next five years for the franchise . At the trade deadline in March 1986, however, the Flames and Richard Kromm handed it over to the New York Islanders and received John Tonelli in return . Konroyd was active for almost two and a half years for the Islanders and temporarily acted as assistant captain before he was transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks in November 1988 with Bob Bassen ; New York received Marc Bergevin and Gary Nylund for this . The defender had his most successful sporting period in Chicago, so the team reached the conference finals in 1989 and 1990 , where it was defeated by the later Stanley Cup winner (Calgary / Edmonton ), and in 1991 won the Presidents' Trophy as the best team the regular season.

In January 1992 the Blackhawks gave him to the Hartford Whalers , who in return sent Rob Brown to Chicago. In exchange for a six- round vote in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft , he got ready in March 1993 to the Detroit Red Wings , for which he completed only 25 NHL missions in one year and finally moved in March 1994 for Daniel Berthiaume to the Ottawa Senators . In Ottawa, he finished the season with eight games and then received no further contract. After a longer period as a free agent , Konroyd joined the Chicago Wolves from the International Hockey League in March 1995 . After they were eliminated from the playoffs after three games at the beginning of April, he briefly returned to the Calgary Flames and came to one and at the same time his last NHL assignment for his former employer. After the season 1994/95 Konroyd ended his active career in which he had completed a total of 992 NHL games and scored 261 points.

Immediately after the end of his career, Konroyd entered the media business and was involved as a commentator and TV expert on broadcasts of games by the Phoenix Coyotes , San Jose Sharks and Columbus Blue Jackets . Since the 2005/06 season he has been active in the same function for Comcast SportsNet (CSN) at games of the Chicago Blackhawks.

International

With the Canadian national team Konroyd took part in the world championships in 1985 and 1991 and won the silver medal with the team there. The defender contributed seven scorer points in 20 games.
