The Stolzenfels is an excursion ship that is operated on behalf of the Cologne-Düsseldorf Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt AG . It is mainly used in the planned service on the Middle Rhine between Koblenz and Rüdesheim . It is also used for special trips, for example at Rhein in Flammen or the Mülheimer Gottestracht , a ship procession that takes place in Cologne-Mülheim on Corpus Christi .

history

The Stolzenfels near Koblenz-Kesselheim

The passenger ship was built by the Hilgers shipyard in Rheinbrohl in 1978 and 1979 under construction number 418 160. The keel was laid in August 1978, the launch on April 14 of the following year. The shipyard delivered the ship in the first week of June. On June 8, 1979, Henny Högener, the wife of the Düsseldorf city director at the time, christened the ship in Koblenz with the name of Koblenz Castle Stolzenfels . The construction costs amounted to 9.1 million  D-Marks . From June 9th, the shipping company used the Stolzenfels mainly on the Middle Rhine between Koblenz and Rüdesheim in scheduled service.

Due to the top-heavy distribution of the weight, the drivers complained about poor driving behavior, which was associated with excessive driving waves. In November 1982, the Hilgers shipyard added a temporary 2.50 m long stern extension at the waterline level to compensate for the weight . This turned out to be insufficient during test drives, so this temporary solution was extended by one meter. As a result of the knowledge gained, Hilgers extended the ship in February 1983 by 3.20 m to 79.84 m. At the same time, various tanks on the lower deck were relocated to other locations in the ship's hull for better weight distribution.

In December 2008, the ship was sold to the wholly owned subsidiary KD Europe S.à rl in Luxembourg and then registered in Valletta , Malta in January 2009 . Since the ships of the Cologne-Düsseldorfer cannot reach their home port due to lack of seaworthiness, they are serviced in the Niehler Hafen in Cologne.

The Stolzenfels is a four-deck passenger ship with three salons in the closed, air-conditioned decks. In the undeveloped lower deck, between the tanks for drinking water, fuel and faeces in the fore and the air conditioning units and machines installed aft, a few cooling and storage rooms have been set up only in the central nave, which are accessible to the staff via stairs from the main deck. With normal seating, the dining room on the front main deck can seat 184 people. In the aft ship , separated by the stairwell, the ship's kitchen , drinks counter and six crew cabins on each side were set up. Behind this is the machine control station at the rear, which is connected to the machine room by stairs. 166 guests can be seated in the upper deck lounge, which is equipped with a bar in the fore ship , and 120 in the subway fast-food restaurant with salad bar, which is separated off by the entrance area . This is followed by two further crew cabins and an open aft deck. The sundeck, separated by a superstructure in the foredeck, is designed for 500 passengers. The ship toilets and four crew cabins were integrated into the superstructure. In 1998, an open, covered bar was built towards the stern. The usable area of the ship is around 715 m², the ceiling height is 2.20 m. The Stolzenfels is approved for a maximum capacity of 1000 passengers.
