The Jan is a workshop ship of the Cologne-Düsseldorf Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt AG and was built in 1928 at the Meiderich shipyard as a passenger ship for the Mülheimer Ruhrschiffahrts-Gesellschaft in Duisburg .

Construction

In 1928 the ship was put into service by the Mülheimer Ruhrschiffahrts-Gesellschaft in Mülheim an der Ruhr under the name of Lord Mayor Lembke . In terms of design, it was a semi-saloon ship with staggered decks. In the lower deck, the accommodation for the crew and the kitchen with utility area were accommodated in front , behind it amidships the engine compartment and on the right a passage to the aft section, which is raised above. On the left was the machinist's room and a wash-up room as well as a staircase to the main deck. The dining room was on the lower deck aft. In the front main deck were the saloon and the guest toilets as well as the stairway to the aft ship, which was covered with a sun sail.

history

In 1936 the Preussisch-Rheinische Dampfschiffahrtsgesellschaft (PRDG) from Cologne acquired the ship and named it Viktor von Scheffel . After a few minor modifications, the shipping company started using the ship on the Upper Rhine . Due to stability problems when the front sun deck was fully occupied and the capacity was too low, the ship was decommissioned at the end of the season and chartered to the Cologne shipping company Theodor Weber & Sons from 1937. The ship used this on the Middle Rhine , but without using the front sun deck.

From the start of the war in 1939 to 1945, the ship, which was converted into a tug at the end of 1938, was used for aid and supply services in Cologne. After the war damage had been repaired, the Viktor von Scheffel resumed service in July 1946 and was temporarily doing the ferry service in Cologne.

In 1956 the ship went back to the PRDG and, after installing a new engine, was renamed Jan von Werth and used as a workshop ship. In 1962 the Bröhl shipyard in Mondorf was converted into a pure tug and workshop ship. For this purpose, parts of the superstructure were removed and cabins for the crew were installed on the aft ship, while a dining room for twelve people was set up on the main deck in front. In the years that followed, general repair and modernization work was carried out on a regular basis. In 1969 a new Deutz SBF 12 M 716 engine with 400 hp was installed. On March 25, 1975, a leak caused a fire in the engine room. Since January 6, 1976, the ship has had the official ship number 4200400.

Since 1993 the ship has only been called Jan , as the KD used the name Jan von Werth for a newly acquired passenger ship. The Jan is used for the maintenance and repair of the jetties , which also includes hauling the Steiger over to a shipyard for overhaul.
