The Lohengrin was a paddle steamer built in 1889/90 by the Preußisch-Rheinischen-Dampfschiffahrtgesellschaft (now Cologne-Düsseldorfer ), which was mostly used in liner services between Cologne and Mainz until 1938. The ship was scrapped in 1947 after damage caused by the war. It was the structurally identical sister ship of the Overstolz .

history

The Lohengrin in Cologne

The Lohengrin was the first of two identical ships to be built in 1889/90 under the construction number 216 at the L.Schmit & Zoon shipyard in Kinderdijk . From March 24th to 26th, 1890, the ship was transferred to Düsseldorf. Two days later, the three and a half hour inspection trip with passengers to Cologne took place. The festive maiden voyage with directors and administrative board members of the shipping company led on March 29 from Cologne to Rolandseck and back. The ship lay in the Rheinauhafen for the next three weeks for the final finishing and painting . On a special trip on April 21, the ship drove with guests of honor from Cologne to Koblenz . The official commissioning on the planned route from Cologne to Mainz was on May 1, 1890.

With the commissioning of the new Cologne passenger ship , the Lohengrin was shut down at the end of the 1938 season. After removing the boiler and the machine, KD first used them in the Deutz port and then in the Rheinauhafen as a living and workshop ship . From June 1942 to October 1943, forced laborers who were deployed in the port were quartered on the ship. At the beginning of 1945 the ship was badly damaged by a bomb. The wreck was scrapped in the spring of 1947.

Special missions

  • On the instructions of the Allies, the ship was used as a troop transport in the area of ​​the Schiffahrtgruppe-West from June 13 to October 17, 1919 .
  • As a result of a railway strike, the Cologne-Düsseldorfer took over the mail delivery on the Rhine from March 11 to December 17, 1923. A post office was set up in the lower front deck of the ships used, the front area of ​​the main deck served as a storage area for parcels. The post office workers lived on the ship during this time.

The Lohengrin was powered by an inclined two-cylinder composite steam engine with slide control from Escher, Wyss & Cie. with an output of 700  PSi driven by two eccentric-controlled 3.80 m high paddle wheels with 8 paddles each. It had 2  cylinder boilers with a heating surface of 262 m² , which generated a steam pressure of 7.5  kp / cm².
