The Statendam is a river cruise ship built in 1965/66 by Royal Riverline AG in Basel , which is used by the Dutch tour operator Feenstra Rijn Lijn in the time charter on the Rhine , Main and Moselle . The ship was named France for the Cologne-Düsseldorfer from 1966 to 1996 .

The cabin ship was built in 1965 and 1966 by the shipyard Christof Ruthof in Mainz-Kastel under construction number 1465 for the Düsseldorf Society for Rhine Steam Shipping. The keel was laid in January 1965, the launch on February 12 of the following year. When it was delivered to the shipyard, the ship had 104 double cabins, some of which had a third fold-out wall bed integrated so that 228 passengers could be accommodated. 1000 passengers were allowed on day trips. The construction costs amounted to 9 million Deutschmarks .

The solemn baptism in the name of France took place on May 12, 1966 in Bonn in the presence of the French ambassador François Seydoux de Clausonne . The maiden voyage led from Bonn to Königswinter, where the ship was officially handed over to the two managing directors of the shipping company. Three days later, the France was used on a gala tour to mark the 75th anniversary of Philips . The journey led from Düsseldorf via Arnhem over the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal to Tiel . Then sailed France the Waal as far as Nijmegen before returning to Dusseldorf. The shipping company had tested this course a few weeks beforehand due to the sometimes narrow passages with the cabin ship Europa . From May 20, 1966, the shipping company used the ship in scheduled service between Rotterdam and Basel. On May 16, 1967, the DGMN and the Preußisch-Rheinische Dampfschiffahrtsgesellschaft merged to form the Cologne-Düsseldorfer Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt AG. The ownership of all ships of the two companies was transferred to the new company. In 1976, the France received the official ship number 4200190.

Due to insufficient passenger volume, the Cologne-Düsseldorfer only used the ship as a reserve ship in the 1989 summer season and decommissioned her from 1990 to 1991 for the same reason. In 1992 and 1993 the France was used on the Rhine , Main and Moselle . Until her final shutdown at the Cologne-Düsseldorfer in November 1995, she was only rarely used on scheduled trips and as a hotel ship. On April 1, 1996 their ownership was transferred to the spun off company KD Deutsche Flusskreuzfahrten GmbH, which sold the decommissioned ship on April 2, 1998 to the Dutch shipping company Bonninga Riverstar BV in Vuren . The new owner modernized the interior of the ship and renamed it Avanti . After the conversion, the Avanti only had 88 passenger cabins and was given the official ship number 2323596 registered in Rotterdam. From August 24, 1998, the Feenstra Rijn Lijn from Arnhem started the time charter on the Rhine and Moselle. In 2002 it was sold to the ship dealer Roel Botter from Koudekerk a / d Rijn, who sold it on to Royal Riverline AG in Basel . In addition to the new name Statendam , the ship received the official ship number 7001727, registered in Basel, at that time. The charter contract was taken over by the new owner

The Statendam is a mid-range three-deck cabin ship. On the main deck there are 39 twin and 9 single cabins in the middle between the crew and supply rooms. There are 49 two-bed cabins and one single cabin on the promenade deck. The standard cabins are each 12  m² in size and they are equipped with two separate beds, shower / toilet, telephone and satellite TV . On the bow side, a large lounge with an integrated bar was set up on the so-called saloon deck, to which the restaurant and on-board kitchen are connected in the central nave. A fitness area with various machines was created on the aft covered deck. The central focal point of the sun deck is a 7.5 × 3.3 m swimming pool, to which rest areas, some of which can be roofed, are connected on both sides. In addition, a four-hole putting green and a large figure chess field are available to passengers for leisure activities. All decks can also be accessed by wheelchair users via stair lifts.

The Statendam is driven by four 12-cylinder diesel engines of the type Deutz FM716 á 312  kW via two Voith-Schneider drives , type E / 106, size 20. The E / 65, size 12 bow thruster, also produced by Voith-Schneider, has a 161 kW electric drive. The ship is 104.30 m long, 11.60 m wide. The maximum draft is given as 1.53 m. By lowering the wheelhouse and chimney, as well as moving the railings and awnings, the height for trips on bodies of water with low bridges, such as the Moselle and Main-Danube Canal , can be reduced to about 7.00 m.
