Stubbe taucht ab is a German television film by Peter Kahane from 1997. It is the eighth film in the ZDF crime film series Stubbe - Von Fall zu Fall with Wolfgang Stumph in the title role.

action

Commissioner Wilfried Stubbe and his colleague Zimmermann have to clear up the death of the shipyard worker Tilo, who is found dead in the Elbe . The corpse shows various signs of fire and torture. The investigations inevitably lead to the trained locksmith Kai, who was close friends with Tilo. Traces of a fight can be found in Kai's apartment, which makes him one of the suspects. For Zimmermann, Kai is known to be the culprit, but there is insufficient evidence. The commissioners suspect that Tilo was involved in drug deals while working at the shipyard because heroin was found in the victim's jacket. In order to fathom the connections, to find possible backers and evidence against Kai, Stubbe is supposed to investigate undercover . Disguised as a shipyard worker, he is specifically looking for proximity to the quay, which is not easy. Kai makes it clear to the “newbie” that he wants to work alone. However, Stubbe is persistent and gradually Kai becomes accessible. At the end of the day he even takes his colleagues to his boat that he got from Tilo's grandfather. He's been tinkering with it for months to make it seaworthy again. Tilo had helped him so far. He would therefore appreciate the help of his new colleague. When he wants to show Stubbe the inner workings of the boat, he has to discover that everything here has been ransacked. Stubbe suspects that Tilo's murderers were at work here, probably looking for the drugs Tilo had been hiding from them. This also explains the traces of torture on the victim. Since he did not tell them where he was hiding, they tortured him, which resulted in his death. Based on Kai's reaction, Stubbe realizes that he is not privy to Tilo's business. The inspector is hoping for information from Anne Gehrke, who also works at the shipyard and who used to be with Kai and also knows a lot about his friend. She gives him the clue to a hiding place where Tilo has sometimes hidden material that he had stolen from his place of work in order to repair the boat. Stubbe looks there and actually finds a large amount of heroin. He informs his colleague Zimmermann, who still suspects Kai and therefore has him under surveillance. Kai manages to escape his police pursuers, but as a result he runs into Tilo's murderers unprotected. They want their heroin back, which they assume Kai knows where his friend has hidden it. The two men kidnap Kai and in his fear he leads them to Tilo's hiding place. Stubbe is already waiting there. He wants to help Kai, but is now caught by the men himself. When Zimmermann arrives with reinforcements, the gangsters simply take Stubbe hostage and flee with him in a motorboat. Since he had handed them the heroin, they throw him out of the boat a short time later so that he can save himself on land.

Subplot

Stubbe's son Fabian successfully completed his banking apprenticeship, but has not felt at home for a long time in Charlotte's future career. He wants to go to Brazil with friends and is now saying goodbye to his family. Charlotte takes it very much and she blames herself for driving the boy away with her intrusiveness. Christiane, on the other hand, discovers her chance to take over her brother's room and finally have more space.
