Against the Stream is a German TV film by Oren Schmuckler from 2010. It is the thirty-eighth film in the ZDF crime film series Stubbe - Von Fall zu Fall with Wolfgang Stumph in the title role.

action

Inspector Stubbe accompanies his colleague Zimmermann to his old hometown of Dresden. Since Zimmermann won a vacation trip for two people, Stubbe insisted on going with him. His first course naturally leads to his former workplace, where he learns that his former supervisor Pionkowski committed suicide a week ago after being diagnosed with cancer . The case is closed for the chief commissioner, but Stubbe finds it strange that Pionkowski did not leave a suicide note. But ultimately everything speaks in favor of the man's suicide. Nevertheless, his forensic instinct is awakened when he happens to come across an old case. Ingmar Wolf, who owes his conviction for murder to Pionkowski, is of the opinion that he had to serve it wrongly. Wolff is so convincing to Stubbe that he wants to look at the case again. After all, he had also been involved in the investigation and would not like to have to blame himself for a mistake. He receives support from his former colleague Günther Jänisch, who is still with the police and looks at the old files again and also discovers some abnormalities.

Stubbe's unauthorized investigations bring such unrest to the Dresden police headquarters that the chief inspector also begins to be interested in Wolff. She summons him and accuses him of causing the death of Pionkowski. At the same time, she demands of Stubbe to refrain from his private "snooping", but this does not prevent him from talking to a former colleague of the victim at the time. She knows of an admirer who came from Hamburg and with whom her colleague had an affair. Since such contacts with the West were undesirable in the former GDR , she had kept her relationship a secret. When the victim's parents were questioned, it turned out that this contact with the West had not remained hidden from the Stasi and had cost her father the position. On Stubbe Werner and Anneliese Fritsch do not give the impression of immensely grieving parents. Stubbe confronts the two of them again at a "local appointment" with the events of that time and so Anneliese Fritsch admits to having killed her own daughter. She couldn't bear that she had put her personal interests before those of the family.

background

The film was shot from June 5 to July 6, 2009 in Hamburg and the surrounding area under the working title Stubbes Reise .

reception

Audience rating

The first broadcast of Gegen den Strom on January 16, 2010 on ZDF reached 7.01 million viewers and a market share of 20.5 percent.

criticism

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv said: “The basic idea is good. Also, not every attempt to weave the GDR past into the crime plot has to be a general accusation. Incidentally building German-German relationship stories into a Whodunit - one would often want such a relaxed approach to history. The shortcoming of 'Gegen den Strom' lies in the relapse into an old-fashioned tone with a mood that is difficult to bear for viewers under 60 and for those who do not benefit from the Stumphi bonus. "

At Kino.de , Tilmann P. Gangloff said: “Despite the humorous teasing between Stubbe and Zimmermann [...] 'Gegen den Strom' is anything but comedic [...] the nostalgic and sentimental feelings alone ensure this Flashback to the early days of the series, when the Stubbe family was still three. After all, the author Illner is indulging the main character of integrity with an unfortunately only fleeting, but very nicely threaded and literally boozy romance with a swimming instructor. "

Torben Gebhardt wrote for quotenmeter.de : “In the series of the last three new Stubbe films broadcast, 'Gegen den Strom' is from the starting point the most ambitious of all three, but in terms of implementation it simply has to be considered the weakest and most disappointing film declare. So this film is only recommended to those for whom the 'Stubbe' series is a must anyway. You get what you expect: light entertainment with a pinch of thoughtfulness and nice visual staging but without any innovation or added value. All other viewers should rather devote themselves to more exciting activities. "

For the critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm , Gegen den Strom was "a bit slick, always entertaining" and gave the film the best possible rating (thumbs up).
