Sven Anton (born June 7, 1970 in Waren an der Müritz , GDR ) is a German volleyball coach and former player. As a Bundesliga player he won three runners-up championships with evivo Düren and as a beach volleyball player he took part in the first official beach volleyball world championship in 1997 with Stefan Pomereke .

Career as a player

Indoor volleyball

The left-hander Sven Anton did not concentrate seriously on the sport of volleyball until he was 17, after a career as a handball player at SC Empor Rostock failed. On the recommendation of his sister who also played volleyball, he came to SC Dynamo Berlin in 1988 , for which he completed his first appearances in the GDR upper league as a middle blocker.

After German reunification, Anton joined SG Rupenhorn Berlin, for which he also played in the first division. After the relegation of his team from the first Bundesliga in the 1993/94 season, he moved to local rivals Post Telekom Berlin in the coming season , where he worked with Frank Dehne , Frank Winkler , Lars Nilsson, Ilja Wiederschein , André Barnowski , André until 1999 Fröhlich and his later beach partner Stefan Pomereke played together. Under coach Michael Mücke, the club reached the final tournament for the DVV-Pokal in 1995 and won the game for third place against Dürener TV after surprisingly knocking out future German champions ASV Dachau in the quarter-finals .

In 1999, Anton moved from Post Telekom Berlin to league competitor Dürener TV, for whom he worked as a player and coach for the next twelve years. In Düren, Anton developed from a middle blocker to a universal player who was also often used in the acceptance / outside and diagonal positions. After Anton's move, Düren improved steadily after the club had often fought relegation in previous years. In the years 2005 to 2007 they won the German runner-up three times in a row with Anton as captain and assistant coach, whereby they lost each time against the German series champion VfB Friedrichshafen .

In the 2006 final series, Düren narrowly missed the German championship title when they lost 3-2 in the best-of-five final series. Anton, who was already 35 at the time, received a lot of playing time throughout the playoffs and regularly scored points for his team, which was also reflected in the volleyball magazine 's best lists , in which Anton took top places in the attack and serve categories this season. He also achieved second place in the election for the most valuable player in the 2005/06 Bundesliga season, only beaten by Jochen Schöps from Master Friedrichshafen. The volleyball magazine praised Anton as a "phenomenon" who "always knows how to get his fellow players in Düren carried away".

beach volleyball

In addition to his career as an indoor volleyball player, Anton gained his first experience in beach volleyball with his teammate at the time, Stefan Pomereke, during the summer break of the Bundesliga . At the domestic world series tournament of the FIVB in Berlin in 1996, the duo managed for the first time to qualify for the main round of an international tournament in which a surprising victory against the multiple overall world series winner Sinjin Smith and his partner Carl Henkel succeeded. In the end, Anton / Pomereke finished 17th both in Berlin and at the next tournament in Durban . From 1996 to 1999 the duo took part in a total of 17 tournaments in the world series (14 of them in 1997 and 1998 alone); best placement was a 13th place in Berlin 1997. In the same year they reached 17th place at the first official beach volleyball world championship in Los Angeles , tied with Krank / Oetke and the Olympic third-placed Ahmann / Hager . While other German, internationally active beach duos at the time, such as Ahmann / Hager and Dieckmann / Dieckmann, mainly concentrated on beach volleyball, Anton and Pomereke were also part of the Bundesliga regular line-up of their club at the time.

At the national level, the Anton / Pomereke duo was more successful. So they temporarily occupied second place in the German rankings and in 1997 they reached third place in the German championship with a win against the Dieckmann twins. The duo separated after the beach season in 1999 when Sven Anton moved to Düren. From 2000 to 2002 Anton played with Sergej Sergeev before he formed a beach volleyball duo with his Düren teammate Malte Holschen from 2003 to 2005 .

Career as a coach

After the 2007/08 season, Anton ended his active career when the opportunity arose to take on the vacant position of head coach at evivo Düren. He became the successor to the Serbian Mirko Culic , under whom he had previously been assistant coach, parallel to his role as a player. His assistant was the former player Björn-Arne Alber , with whom he had previously stood on the field. Anton's greatest success as a coach in 2010 was the entry into the final of the DVV Cup . In April 2011 it was announced that Düren would not extend its expiring contract. After leading the team into the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup this season , he reached the semi-finals of the German championship again shortly afterwards, before being replaced by Söhnke Hinz in the summer .
