Season course
Almost all of the favorites prevailed in the men's round of 16, for which other teams besides the Bundesliga team qualified. Rhein-Ruhr Volley from Bottrop was the only second division team to reach the quarter-finals, where they failed to runner-up evivo Düren, while VfB Friedrichshafen defeated Moerser SC in last year's final. The defending champion moved into the final again with a narrow win at SCC Berlin, while Düren had the chance of winning the first title in the club's history after beating Eltmann in the semi-final. Ultimately, VfB prevailed and celebrated their tenth cup victory.
All second division teams were eliminated in the women's round of 16. Köpenick and Dresden prevailed in Bundesliga duels. The German champions then failed in the quarter-finals in Vilsbiburg, while Wiesbaden defeated the defending champions from Schwerin. So there were four teams in the semi-finals that had never been cup winners. Hamburg and Suhl finally qualified for the final. The women from Thuringia won the first title in their club history.
