The idea of a book festival was born in early 1998, when Tübingen booksellers and publishers and representatives of cultural institutions developed a program under the motto 500 Years of the Book City of Tübingen (the first printed book in Tübingen, a theological work by Paul Scriptoris , was published in 1498). At the 59 events of the First Tübingen Book Festival from 24. – 26. July 1998 participated as authors u. a. Harry Rowohlt , Peter Härtling and Sibylle Berg took part.
The date of the Tübingen Book Festival is from May to July and thus between the Leipzig and Frankfurt Book Fair . The Tübingen Book Festival is still organized today by the Tübingen book trade in cooperation with the city's cultural institutions. Classical readings make up the main part of the 80-100 events, but the approach of presenting literature in an unconventional way has been an integral part of the overall concept since the first book festival. Events such as poetry on the punt , literary wine tasting, literary fashion show and literary walks (through the old town and through the city cemetery) as well as the antiquarian market are recurring events of the festival. Reading takes place in halls, in squares and in gardens and buildings in Tübingen's old town that are otherwise inaccessible to the public, such as the Hölderlin Tower , the Wilhelmsstift , the garden of the Evangelical Monastery of Tübingen or the courtroom of the Tübingen District Court , with a noticeable focus on the Let readings take place in the open air and in attractive places if possible. In bad weather conditions, the events are relocated indoors. Members of the organizing committee and selected moderators accompany the events. The overall concept of the book festival also includes the host country, which should be integrated as diverse as possible from a literary and cultural perspective.
history
After the first book festival, the organizers decided to establish the event as a permanent institution - with festivals every two years. Between 1998 and 2015 there were 9 book festivals with almost 2000 participants. The fifth Tübingen Book Festival, which should have taken place regularly in 2006, was postponed by a year because of the 2006 soccer World Cup. Since 2002, the Book Festival has had a guest country as its literary focus, which is supported organizationally and financially by the respective embassies and consulates as well as by international foundations such as the Robert Bosch Foundation and Pro Helvetia .

Quotes and press reviews
“The program is huge: The numerous events of the Tübingen Book Festival attracted thousands of literature fans to the city. At readings they could be very close to authors, plus there was a theater and a large open-air second-hand bookshop. "
"The fascinating thing about the Tübingen Book Festival is the multitude of different events that take place at the same time, just a few minutes' walk from each other.
“Tübingen Book Festival. A whole city is transformed into a conspiratorial nest for those addicted to reading. Everywhere there is a temptation to glide on the wings of the word into the most seductive, fantastic, bizarre worlds. In the shadow of the collegiate church, under the treetops on the banks of the Neckar, on a punt or in the district court. Literature as atmosphere, temptation, field of experimentation. "
"A Woodstock of Literature."
"It is not the biggest, but the most beautiful book festival in Germany."
