occupation

To err is fatal is a television film from the crime series Tatort by ARD and ORF . The film was produced by Norddeutscher Rundfunk under the direction of Wolfgang Storch and first broadcast on April 14, 1985. It is the third case of the chief detective Paul Stoever ( Manfred Krug ). He investigates at the side of his Kiel colleague Geerke ( Horst Michael Neutze ).

action

A young woman is attacked in a forest near Kiel and has to be taken to hospital, seriously injured. The responsible Commissioner Geerke takes over the case and questions her fiancé Werner Rentrop, who then tries in the clinic to get clues about the perpetrator from his girlfriend. After she can whisper a few sentences to him, he asks about a ship in the port of Kiel and then drives to Hamburg . Once there, he wants to inquire about his girlfriend by phone at the hospital and learn that she has succumbed to her injuries.

In the meantime, Rentrop's girlfriend's bike is found in the port of Kiel. With this, Commissioner Geerke also gets on the track of the ship and learns from the shipping office that someone recently asked about the "Baltic". So Geerke got in touch with his colleague Paul Stoever from the Hamburg criminal police. The next day he was called to the Hamburg coal port, as the corpse of the machinist Kurbjuweit of the coaster “Baltic” was fished out of the water. Since the dead person has a high alcohol content in their blood, they could well have fallen into the water through no fault of their own. Commissioner Stoever doubts this after the crew of the ship was targeted by his colleague Geerke. He is now traveling to Hamburg himself and suspects a connection with his case in Kiel. An act of revenge by Werner Rentrop would be obvious. Stoever and Geerke meet him in a harbor bar and warn him not to practice vigilante justice. When he leaves the bar, he remains under the watchful eye of the police and the commissioners shed light on the alibis of the crew members of the "Baltic". Benno Krötz appears to them to be the most suspicious, especially since he is on file with the police due to various violent crimes. At first he denies having attacked the woman in Kiel.

Werner Rentrop has meanwhile procured a weapon and is now lying in wait for Benno Krötz on the ship, because he too thinks he is the murderer of his girlfriend. However, when Stoever and Geerke also appear there, he hides on deck. Stoever attacks Krötz so skillfully that he admits the attack on the woman. On the other hand, he denies guilt for the machinist's death. Rentrop hears the confession and shoots his girlfriend's murderer, injuring his shoulder. To defend him, Stoever draws his weapon and kills Rentrop in the process.
