The building at (today's) Vahrenwalder Straße 7 was built between 1912 and 1914 by the architect Peter Behrens for what was then Continental Caoutchouc- u. Gutta-Percha-Co. (later: Continental AG ) established. Due to the First World War , the administrative building could only be expanded during the Weimar Republic from 1919 to 1920. Since then, the building has been used by Continental AG as the main administrative headquarters.

The building was severely damaged in World War II. In the years of reconstruction , the architects Ernst Zinsser and Werner Dierschke built the Continental skyscraper on Königsworther Platz as the new headquarters of the “Conti” from 1952 to 1953 . The old administration building was rebuilt in major changes and later placed under monument protection.

In 1984 the city of Hanover acquired the administration building on Vahrenwalder Strasse for 16 million marks . After it was handed over to the municipal Union-Boden GmbH, it was initially used by the Technologiecentrum Hannover (TCH), where a number of companies such as Viscom or KoRiS started. “In 2007 the last phase of renovation began in close coordination with the monument protection department ”.

After the economic region of Hanover had increased its economic power by [most recently] around 25 percent since 2001, the city of Hanover and the Hanover region decided at the beginning of 2011 to merge all institutions in the city and region that deal with business development and location marketing in a broader sense .

On March 13, 2012, the new House of Economic Development was officially opened by Regional President Hauke Jagau , the Hanoverian Economic Department Head Hans Mönninghoff and the President of the Hanover Chamber of Commerce, Hannes Rehm , together with around 100 guests from business, science, politics and administration. The services under one central roof are now intended to strengthen the around 66,000 companies based in the region with around 440,000 employees, as well as new companies to be founded from the start.
