life and work

The Tetseo sisters Mercy, Azi, Kuvelü and Alüne grew up in the Naga capital Kohima and are members of the Chakhesang , one of the larger Naga tribes. They speak and sing in the Chokri dialect of the Phek area . From childhood on, their parents introduced them to Li , the traditional songs of their homeland. They appeared in public early on, starting in 2000 regularly at Nagaland's annual cultural festival, the Hornbill Festival. With increasing popularity, they expanded their radius by appearing in other places in Nagaland, Northeast India , New Delhi and other states of the Indian Union. While the two older sisters Mercy and Azi were studying, the Tetseos also performed as duos, the older ones in New Delhi, the younger ones in Kohima. The sisters have repeatedly been able to show their art at official events as representatives of the state, including at the North East Trade Opportunities Summit in Bangkok in 2008 , and at the handshake concerts in Bangkok in 2012, in Rangoon in 2014 , in Kunming in 2015 and in Gwangju in 2016 . On May 1, 2012, the sisters were part of the supporting program at Prince Andrew's state reception on the occasion of Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee.

In 2013, the Tetseo Sisters and other artists, led by Alobo Naga, took part in the video "My vote makes my future", which the Election Commission of India used to encourage young voters to participate in the elections for the Nagaland Assembly. The Tetseo Sisters, along with numerous other musicians from the region, including Alobo Naga and Soulmate , also made a contribution to “We are the 8!”, The anthem of the Indian Super League club NorthEast United FC .

In August 2014, Mercy and Kuvelü Tetseo performed as part of a fifty-member folklore group from Nagaland at the twenty-four shows at the Royal Military Tattoo in Edinburgh and at other shows in Scotland. In October 2014 Mercy, Kuvelü and Lulu Tetseo and their brother Mhaseve were part of the entourage of the governor of Nagaland and Tripura P. B. Acharya on a visit to the USA. Concerts took place in Chicago , Bloomington (Illinois) and Detroit .

In 2015, in addition to numerous appearances at national festivals, several cover versions of different styles were recorded.

Discography

On the occasion of the Hornbill Festival 2011, the Tetseos released their first CD entitled "Li: Chapter One: The Beginning".

Li

The Chakhesang have a traditional songbook of 223 songs, the Li kukre kutiko . Other songs have so far only been passed on orally in the villages of the region. The Li include songs for special occasions, love songs, children's songs, lamentations, war chants and songs that are assigned to the annual cycle and agriculture. Characteristic are the repetitive "Ho-he-ho" - "Hiyo-hiyohey" choirs, which are divided between several groups either as a supplement ad libitum or as an echo. In addition to their complexity, they serve to strengthen group awareness.

The Tetseo Sisters make use of the rich treasure trove of traditional songs. They accompany some of their pieces on the single-stringed lute Tati or Heka Libüh .
