Thank You for Bombing (also Good Morning Kabul ) is an Austrian feature film from 2015 by Barbara Eder . It premiered on September 11, 2015 at the 40th Toronto International Film Festival . At the Zurich Film Festival in September 2015, the film was shown in the Focus Switzerland, Germany, Austria competition section and was awarded as the best feature film. In Austria, the film was shown in March 2016 at the Diagonale in Graz.

action

The film deals with the topic of war reporting through three storylines with three fictional international television journalists who are loosely connected to one another. The common background is the burning of volumes of the Koran in Afghanistan in February 2012.

The Austrian war correspondent Ewald provided images of terror and war on TV screens for years, including the 1992 Bosnian War , where his team was attacked and his cameraman was killed. Ewald has been a psychological wreck ever since. Nevertheless, he received the order from the editor-in-chief to fly to Kabul . At Vienna-Schwechat Airport , he thinks he recognizes his cameraman's murderer.

The young, aspiring and attractive US reporter Lana is already on site in Afghanistan, but is not taken seriously by her colleagues as a woman and is groped during a live introduction in Kabul. She hopes for a great career by investigating two US soldiers who are said to have burned several editions of the Koran. However, the two of them want something from her for an interview that they cannot get from a male reporter.

News reporter Cal, a hardened and crazy adrenaline junkie, is expected to take spectacular pictures. If there is not enough "worth seeing" to film, he has no problem with staging scenes himself. After waiting in vain for a popular uprising against the US troops in Kabul, he is ready to visit the Taliban himself and risk his life in the process.

production

The shooting took place from October 2013 to January 2014 in Vienna , Jordan and Kabul . The film was supported by the Austrian Film Institute , the Vienna Film Fund and Filmstandort Austria , and the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation was involved . The film was produced by Lotus Film . Atanas Tcholakov and Alexander Koller were responsible for the sound, Christine Ludwig for the costume design and Maria Gruber for the production design. In addition to German and English, Serbo-Croatian , Pashto and Dari are spoken in the film .

Barbara Eder originally conceived the film as a documentary. During a year-long research in Beirut , on the Lebanese-Syrian border and in Afghanistan, she made the acquaintance of reporters and photographers working in war zones. Then she came to the conclusion that she had to process the experiences in a fictitious context in order not to harm the crisis reporter professionally.

In October 2016 the film was released on DVD, Blu-ray and as video-on-demand.

reception

The cinema magazine Skip wrote: “Thank you for bombing takes a crystal clear view of the cynical business of war reporting: A film that shows how difficult it is to implement independent crisis journalism.” At the Viennale 2016, the film was awarded the Vienna Film Prize as the best feature film excellent, on the grounds of the jury that the film primarily raises questions of media and social analysis and contributes to the reflection on the distinction between real information and propagandistic disinformation.

DerStandard.at judged: “The fact that the individual stories sometimes strike a sensational tone themselves may seem uncomfortably disturbing at first glance, but it does its job. Because it is precisely in its dramatically pointed moments that this film conveys the feeling of direct testimony most vividly. Even if you'd rather look the other way. ”And Simon Hadler wrote on Orf.at :“ War reporters know that strong stories are needed - soft tones are not heard. Eder knows that too. "
