action
Jim Bennett is a heavily indebted and gambling addict professor of literature . He borrows money from several loan sharks and gambled it away. His mother Roberta gives him $ 260,000 to pay off his debt and save his life. He also gambled away this money. One of the criminal moneylenders finds out that basketball player Lamar is on Bennet's course and forces Bennett to get Lamar to win the next game by no more than 8 points. Bennett borrows money again and puts it anonymously on the basketball game. But even the high profit is not enough to pay off his two main creditors, who are now threatening his life. He meets with the two of them in a gambling establishment that is controlled by an even more powerful underworld figure, so that neither of the two can forcibly access his money. At the roulette table he stakes all his capital from the basketball bet on black, wins and for the first time does not simply keep playing. He leaves the winnings on the table for his creditors and leaves the gambling den without a single penny in his pocket. Outside he throws his jacket in a garbage can and rejects an offer from one of the two moneylenders to pay him his six-figure surplus from the game of roulette. At dawn he runs across town as if liberated and at the end knocks on the door of his student Amy, who fell in love with him during the course of the film.
