Creation and publication
The Heart Wants What It Wants was recorded at the beginning of 2014. In February 2014, Gomez posted a picture from the video of The Heart Wants What It Wants , entitled "... Secret project". The American radio presenter Ryan Seacrest later announced that he had heard or seen the song and the accompanying video. He said: “People will certainly argue again about whether or not the video is about their relationship with Justin Bieber , that's for sure [...]. I saw it, looked at her and listened to the lyrics and just said, this song will be something that people will talk about and wonder about! "
The Heart Wants What It Wants was written and produced by Selena Gomez, the producer team Antonina Armato and Tim James, who are known under the pseudonym Rock Mafia , and the German songwriter and music producer David Jost . Rock Mafia are known for their collaboration with Selena Gomez and produced the songs Naturally , Love You Like a Love Song , My Dilemma and Stars Dance , among others . The song was released on November 6, 2014.
In an interview with Ryan Seacrest on the American radio station "102.7 KIIS FM" , Gomez said the following about her song: "For me, this song is a step towards where everything has to be said that I wanted to say and for what has to be said, when the time is right. […] And I think after this year this is the perfect way to end the year, as well as a successful way to close a certain chapter. This song is everything I wanted to say about certain people who judged all of my decisions. Also, this song is for all of the hearts that have been judged for what they have done. "
criticism
The song received critical acclaim for its lyrics, production, vocals, and all the other efforts that Gomez has put in. AXS.com's Lucas Villa compared the song positively to Lana Del Rey's . He praises Gomez for the "hip-hop beats" and the dark charm of the lyrics. He then referred to the song as a "heartbreaking" revelation from Selena Gomez 's five-year-old songbook. He said that The Heart Wants What It Wants was beautiful and vulnerable at the same time.
Music video
The music video for "The Heart Wants What It Wants" was shot in early 2014. Dawn Shadforth directed the all-black and white video. The video premiered on November 6, 2014 on VEVO . The video had over 5 million views in less than 12 hours and over 9 million views in 24 hours. It has had more than 480 million views since its launch (as of May 2017).
Live performances
On November 25, 2014, The Heart Wants What It Wants performed for the first time at the 2014 American Music Awards . A video of the appearance was then published on Vevo , which currently has around 12.5 million views (as of January 7, 2015). After their performance, the song rose to number 2 on the iTunes charts and climbed over 20 places, up to 6 on the American charts.
