When the Sun Goes Down ( English for "When the sun goes down") is the third album of American pop - band Selena Gomez & the Scene . It was published on July 21, 2011 in Austria and on July 24, 2011 in Germany and Switzerland. It was released under the Hollywood Records label , to which the band and lead singer Selena Gomez have been under contract since June 2008. Who Says , Love You Like a Love Song and Hit the Lights were released as singles . When the Sun Goes Down has been awarded gold in Mexico, USA, Spain, Indonesia and Poland and in Canada with once platinum.

Background and origin

Selena Gomez wanted to take a break after her successful second album A Year Without Rain and was in no rush to release a new album. But after hearing Who Says , which she found so overwhelming and beautiful, she decided to release a new album. It moved her to new inspiration. According to 'Gomez, the album should be taken more seriously, since it has already matured and grown up.

The album was produced and composed by rock mafia duo Antonina Armato and Tim James, Devrim Karaoglu, Toby Gad and Katy Perry , who were known for previous work with the band. The band had a new collaboration with Britney Spears , Pixie Lott , Emanuel Kiriakou and Dreamlab.

On June 1, the band released the title of the album and the track list. In an interview, Gomez admitted that she did not expect the album and the first two songs to be a success and that My Dilemma was her favorite song on the album.

Who Says

The 1st single Who Says was written by Emanuel Kiriakou and Priscilla Hamilton and also produced by Kiriakou. It was published in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on March 14, 2011. Who Says got quite good reviews. Who Says is a teen pop song. Who Says was quite successful in the charts. In Germany it reached number 44, in Austria number 62 and in the USA number 21 and thus had the highest ranking of the band in the American charts. Who Says was awarded 3 × platinum in the USA.

The music video for Who Says was directed by Chris Applebaum and premiered on VEVO on March 11, 2011.

Love You Like a Love Song

The second single Love You Like a Love Song was written and produced by Antonina Armato and Tim James (Rock Mafia Duo). It was released worldwide on June 17, 2011. Love You Like a Love Song is classified as an electro-pop song. It reached number 22 in the American charts and was sold over 2.6 million times in the United States, making it 5 times platinum. This makes it the band's most successful single. It also got a platinum award in Norway.

The music video for Love You Like a Love Song was directed by Geremy Jasper and Georgie Greville. According to 'Gomez, it's the craziest music video she's made so far. It celebrated its premiere on June 23, 2011 on VEVO.

Hit the lights

The third single Hit the Lights was written by Leah Haywood, Daniel James and Tony Nilsson and produced by Dreamlab. The song was released on January 20, 2012 in Switzerland and on January 27, 2012 in Germany and Austria. It is classified as a dance song. Hit the Lights went platinum in the United States.

The music video was shot by Philip Andelman and premiered on November 16, 2011 on VEVO. Hit the Lights was shot in late September 2011. On November 7, 2011, VEVO released 5 short teasers and on November 9, 2011 a behind-the-scenes video. On April 19, 2012, a second version of the music video was released on VEVO, which is known as the “Night Version” (German: “Night Version”).

Promotional singles

To promote the album to be released, the band released the singles Bang Bang Bang and the Spanish version of the song Who Says, Dices on iTunes on June 7, 2011 . Bang Bang Bang reached number 49 on the American charts. On December 2, 2011, the song Whiplash, written by Britney Spears , was released .

The album received mediocre to good reviews. Metacritic gave the album a 58% rating based on 6 reviews. Allmusic gave the album a 4 out of 5 star rating, Rolling Stone 2 out of 5 stars, Club Fonograma a 64% rating, and Entertainment Weekly a B + (Good) rating. Rolling Stone magazine's Jody Rosen wrote, 'Gomez is perhaps the most boring teen pop artist of her generation to date. She makes Ashley Tisdale look like Lady Gaga next to her . '

Sales figures

In the week of July 4, 2011, it debuted at number 4 on the American charts and sold over 78,000 units in its first week. In the next week it rose to number 3, making it the most successful album in the band's history in the USA. In Canada, the album debuted at number 2, with 9,000 units sold in its 1st week. To date, the album has sold over 850,000 times in the US and over 1,000,000 times worldwide.
