The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (Japaneseゼルダの伝説時のオカリナ3D. Zeruda no Densetsu: Toki no Ocarina 3D ) is a video game from the genre action adventure . It was released by the Japanese game consoles and software manufacturer Nintendo in June 2011 for the handheld Nintendo 3DS . The game was developed by the Japanese studio Grezzo in cooperation with Nintendo.

The game is a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time , developed by Nintendo and originally released for the Nintendo 64 in late 1998 . Ocarina of Time had already been ported to other consoles before, but the 3DS version is the first revised version.

Ocarina of Time 3D received extremely positive reviews and is one of the best-selling 3DS games.

Game description

Ocarina of Time 3D corresponds to the plot and the gameplay of the original game. In addition, the 3DS port contains Ocarina of Time Master Quest (Japanese ゼ ル ダ の 伝 説 時 の オ カ リ ナ 3D 裏 , Zeruda no Densetsu: Toki no Okarina 3D Ura ), an expansion of the original game with a higher level of difficulty and new labyrinths.

The graphics have been completely revised. All 3D models were redesigned and new, high-resolution textures were created. The environment was also adapted to the higher graphic performance of the Nintendo 3DS by increasing the details in many areas. For example, the shops where you can buy something have been equipped with additional furnishings or furniture.

The frame rate is now 30 frames per second, in the original it was still 20. In addition, the autostereoscopic 3D effect of the 3DS is used. As a result, the sighting system had to be reprogrammed. On the acoustic side, however, there are no changes compared to the original.

The second screen on Nintendo 3DS, which did not exist in the other versions of the game, is mostly used to display the map of the respective area. It also shows the menu selection screen, making it easier to switch equipment. In general, the menu has been revised and simplified. Furthermore, the second screen is used to use the equipped items via touchscreen and to activate and deactivate the first person perspective . However, this can still only be used when the character is at a standstill. As in the original game, the player can look around using an analog stick in first person view. Alternatively, the 3DS can be tilted thanks to the gyro sensors .

Due to the lack of a force feedback motor in Nintendo 3DS, there is no force feedback effect. Since this makes the "Philosopher's Stone", which uses the force feedback effect to draw attention to hidden locations in the original game, useless, its function has been changed. In this version, this instead displays an icon with information about secrets.

development

Production details

Ocarina of Time 3D was developed by the Japanese developer Grezzo . Grezzo was founded in December 2006 by ex- Square Enix employee Koichi Ishii . The project, which Ishii was producing, was Grezzo's second game. The Nintendo departments Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development (EAD) and Nintendo Software Planning & Development (SPD) cooperated on production and supported Grezzo.

The producers were the Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma from EAD Kyoto 3 and Takao Shimizu from EAD Tokyo 1. The EAD bosses Takashi Tezuka and Shigeru Miyamoto worked in the superordinate producer position . Another producer was Shinya Takahashi from SPD. The music was arranged by Mahito Yokota and Takeshi Hama . Yokota composed an orchestral piece for the credits.

Development process

After Nintendo decided to reissue Ocarina of Time for the 3DS, Grezzo was chosen as a possible developer. To make this possible, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata invited Grezzo President Ishii to Nintendo. In a conversation, some studio employees were introduced to the 3DS, which was still in the development phase, and the studio was commissioned with the project. Due to the incomplete and new hardware, a lengthy experimentation phase was required at the beginning of the development, which the Nintendo producer Shimizu drove with new information about the 3DS.

The developers knowingly carried over most of the game bugs that already existed in the original game. So they wanted to reproduce the game as true to the original as possible so as not to change the feel of the game. Many mistakes in the game also had a kind of cult status in the fan base, whose cult the developers wanted to keep. Eiji Aonuma's main motivation was to redesign the water temple.

There are four action buttons available on the 3DS, two fewer than on the N64. In order to still enable convenient control, Grezzo put together a team very early in the development of the new edition to explore the possibilities offered by the touchscreen. So the idea came about to show additional buttons virtually on the touchscreen. A week before the Nintendo 2010 conference, which was held on September 29, 2010, Aonuma proposed adding motion control to the project. Only two weeks before the creation of the final ROM, the team expanded this function at Shigeru Miyamoto's suggestion, so that slight camera swiveling can also be achieved in normal mode by tilting the system.

Announcement, publication and sales figures

The Electronic Entertainment Expo took place in mid-June 2010 . Behind closed doors, Nintendo demonstrated an Ocarina-of-Time 3D technology demo , which, however, was not playable. The demo was intended to demonstrate the capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS. During the Nintendo press conference, Nintendo announced via Twitter that it was not just a tech demo, but a game that was really in development.

It was finally released on June 16, 2011 in Japan, one day later in Europe, followed by North America on June 19.

As of March 31, 2012, Ocarina of Time 3D had sold 2.61 million copies, making it the third most successful 3DS game.

Ocarina of Time 3D was rated extremely positively and is Metacritic's best-rated 3DS game as of February 2013. The Metascore calculated from 85 individual ratings, i.e. a global rating average, is 94/100.
