history

The ensemble was founded in 1973 by Peter Phillips , who trained as an organist from 1972 to 1975 at St John's College in Oxford and studied music with David Wulstan and Denis Arnold. Phillips founded an amateur vocal music ensemble with members of church choirs from Oxford and Cambridge , which after ten years of concert activity decided to perform professionally in the future. From the ensemble's first performance on November 3, 1973 at St Mary Magdalen's Church in Oxford, Phillips sought to produce a distinctive sound influenced by choirs he admired, particularly the Clerkes of Oxenford , conducted by David Bead. Since they 1987 Gramophone Award received, apply The Tallis Scholars as one of the world's leading ensembles for polyphony of the Renaissance .

Concerts

The ensemble tours Europe , North America , Asia and Australia with an average of seventy concerts a year . In April 1994 they sang Gregorio Allegris Miserere mei, Deus in the newly restored Sistine Chapel in the Vatican and in February 1994 they performed in the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the death of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina .

In 1998, The Tallis Scholars celebrated the ensemble's twenty-fifth anniversary with a concert at the National Gallery in London . In 1999 they toured China and gave two concerts in Beijing . At the turn of the millennium , they performed with Paul McCartney in New York City . On the occasion of its 40th anniversary in 2013, the ensemble embarked on a world tour through the United States , Europe, Australia and New Zealand . The tour began with a concert at St Paul's Cathedral in London for an audience of two thousand.

Recordings

The Tallis Scholars have been publishing on their own record label , Gimell Records, founded by Peter Phillips and Steve Smith since March 1980 . The music label was named after the composition technique Gymel .

Soon there was agreement among listeners and critics that "the recordings of the Tallis Scholars are of reliable quality". Between 1981 and 2006 the ensemble released forty critically acclaimed records. The recordings cover a repertoire from over 150 years of music history (around the years 1450–1600), with some excursions into the later repertoire. In 2010 Gimell Records released their fiftieth recording, Lamentations of Jeremiah by Tomás Luis de Victoria . Other notable record releases include Josquin Desprez 's Missa Pange lingua and Missa La sol fa re mi , both of which were named Record of the Year by Gramophone Magazine . In 2011 the recording Miserere mei, Deus by Gregorio Allegri, recorded at Merton College , Oxford in 1980, was named one of the "fifty greatest recordings of all time" by BBC Music Magazine .
