concept
Game and player
The game show combines a quiz with a game of chance. In each game (there are usually two games per broadcast), a pair of candidates plays in three rounds for a theoretically possible profit of € 2,474,994 (in season 1 € 3,069,994). The candidate couple consists of two acquaintances, relatives, spouses or life partners. Once the application has been accepted, it will be cast at the station's headquarters in Cologne . If successful, it will be shot at the candidate's home before the program is recorded in a television studio. Up to four relatives or friends of the pair of players are present on the sidelines of the stage.
Production and broadcast
The seven episodes of the first season were recorded in Paris (then the only European location of a wall) and broadcast on Fridays (pilot broadcast) and Saturdays during prime time. The four episodes of the second season were recorded in Warsaw and broadcast on Fridays.
The wall
The eponymous component of the game show and the core element is an oversized Galton board . At the top there are seven start boxes, which are labeled from left to right with the numbers 1 to 7. Each start box can hold up to three balls on top of each other. Below this are 13 rows of bars lying next to each other, which can deflect the balls to the left or right. The horizontal and vertical distance between the bars is slightly more than a ball diameter. Each row of bars is horizontally offset from the previous one by half a bar spacing - the top bars are exactly below the center of the start boxes. After the thirteenth row of bars, the upper edges of the 15 adjacent money boxes functionally form a fourteenth and last row of bars. Each of the 15 money boxes can hold up to three balls. The seven middle money boxes are located exactly below the seven start boxes.
The 12 m high wall is usually illuminated in blue. When it shows whether a quiz question has been answered correctly, it lights up green (correct answer) or red (incorrect answer). In the area of the bars, the current account balance, quiz questions, answer options to quiz questions, clips to quiz questions or the player in "isolation" are displayed as pictures or videos.
The balls
From the top of the wall, the green, white, or red balls the size of a soccer ball fall down. They are deflected to the left or right by bars in the wall and, after about 9 seconds of falling, land on the lower edge of the wall in one of 15 money boxes. Each money box is assigned an amount in euros (the maximum amount increases with each game round) and depending on the color of the ball increases (green ball) or decreases (red ball) the player's account balance increases by the value of the money box. With white balls, the correct answer to a quiz question decides whether the balls turn green or red. Up to three balls can fall at the same time and possibly influence each other. A money box is high enough to hold all the balls played at the same time.

The values of the high sums in the money boxes were reduced by 33 to 16.66% (mainly by 20%) in the second season compared to the first, and by 20 to 16.66% for the maximum values. The possible winnings are thus reduced, as is the risk of loss with red balls.

Round 1: Free fall
After the moderator has asked one of five questions, three white balls fall simultaneously from start boxes 1, 4 and 7 on the wall. While the moderator reads out the two answers, the pair of candidates must choose A or B as the answer option before the first ball has fallen into one of the money boxes, otherwise the question is considered to be answered incorrectly. If the answer is given in good time and correct, the wall and balls turn green and the value of the money boxes into which the balls fell are credited to the account. If the answer is wrong, the wall and balls turn red and the value of the money boxes is deducted from the balance. The value of the account can drop to a maximum of 0 euros, thus never assuming a negative value. The pair of candidates must have earned at least one euro after answering the five questions in order to get to round 2, otherwise the show for the couple will end prematurely.
In this round, a maximum of € 90,000 (5 × 3 × € 6,000 ) could be earned in season 1 , in season 2 it is a maximum of € 75,000 (5 × 3 × € 5,000 )
round 2
At the beginning, the candidates decide which of them will answer the quiz questions. This goes into "isolation" (a room in the wall). He does not notice whether his answers are right or wrong and what his partner is earning on the wall.
Candidate 2 chooses starting boxes for two green balls that fall at the same time. The amount of the money boxes is credited to the account.
Candidate now has 1 quiz questions to answer. Candidate 2 in front of the wall is first shown the three possible answers - but not yet the question. Depending on his opinion of how well candidate 1 will answer the question, he chooses a starting box (the expected value increases from left to right) for a white ball. Then question and answer follow and the wall shows whether the latter is right or wrong. The white ball then turns green or red, falls into a money box and changes the account balance. For the second question, candidate 2 can choose 2 balls, for the third question even up to 3.
At the end (if the account balance is not 0) 2 red balls fall out of the same starting boxes that were initially chosen for the green balls. The amount earned will be deducted from the account.
In this round, a maximum of € 479,998 ((2 + (1 + 2 + 3)) × € 60,000 - 2 × € 1) could be earned in season 1, in season 2 it is a maximum of € 399,998 ((2 + (1 + 2 +3)) × 50,000 € - 2 × 1 €)
Round 3: The final decision
Round 3 corresponds to round 2 with the following differences:
- Four instead of two green and red balls are played.
- The green and red balls are not played at the same time, but one behind the other.
- There are now four instead of three possible answers to the quiz questions.
After the current account balance has been announced after the last question and the fall of the associated ball (s), a contract for a guaranteed amount is sent to candidate 1. This sum consists of the profit from round 1 plus an additional € 4,000 (€ 5,000 in season 1) for each question correctly answered in rounds 2 and 3. The isolation candidate is not given the guarantee amount - he has to estimate his own success in answering the questions. He can accept the contract (the candidate couple then receives the guaranteed amount as a profit) or tear it up (the candidate couple then receives the account balance after round 3 as a profit). Communication with candidate 2 is not possible.
Then the four red balls fall one after the other, provided there is still a win. When the last ball has fallen, candidate 1 comes back on stage. He tells his partner his decision regarding the contract and learns from him the amount of the winnings.
In this round, a maximum of € 2,499,996 ((4 + (1 + 2 + 3)) × € 250,000 - 4 × € 1) could be earned in season 1, in season 2 it is a maximum of € 1,999,996 ((4 + (1 + 2 + 3)) × 200,000 € - 4 × 1 €).
statistics
Probabilities
A ball is deflected to the left or right on each rod with a probability of 50%. The top six rows of bars widen towards the bottom, in rows 8, 10, 12 or 14 the ball on the right or left wall is redirected back to the center.
In the case of the middle start box (number 4), there is a perfect binomial distribution (with n = 14) over the 15 money boxes. The middle money box is hit with a probability of 20.9%, one of the two money boxes next to it with 18.3% each, the following next boxes with 12.2%, 6.1% and 2.2% each. For all other boxes the probabilities are less than 1%. The middle seven money boxes achieve an overall probability of 94.3%.
The perfect binomial distribution is no longer achieved from another start box due to a possible reflection on a wall. For the middle nine money boxes, the probabilities change only very slightly.
In all rounds, the money boxes with the values € 1, € 10 and € 100 are always in the same positions. Regardless of the starting box, there is a 50% chance that they will be hit.
In rounds 2 and 3, starting boxes 1 and 2 cannot hit the money box with the maximum amount.
Expected value
1st season
In the case of a ball, the following expected values result for the euro amount (rounded to full euros):
Start box 1 | Start box 2 | Start box 3 | Start box 4 | Start box 5 | Start box 6 | Start box 7 | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Round 1 | 1,870 € | € 1,970 | € 2,057 | € 2,095 | € 2,057 | € 1,970 | 1,870 € |
round 2 | € 2,577 | € 3,714 | € 5,254 | € 7,184 | € 9,428 | € 11,958 | € 14,893 |
Round 3 | € 19,741 | € 25,318 | € 31,332 | € 37,599 | € 44,315 | € 52,294 | € 62,786 |
The expected value for the profit over all rounds results exclusively from the white balls (i.e. the quiz questions), because green and red balls cancel each other out. If all questions are answered correctly and the starting box 7 and the maximum number of balls are selected each time in rounds 2 and 3, that is € 495,249 (5 × € 2,095 + (5 + 5) × € 1,870 + (1 + 2 +) 3) × 14,893 € + (1 + 2 + 3) × 62,786 € ). That is 16.1% of the maximum possible profit of € 3,069,994.

- ** The format was heavily promoted by RTL in advance and should start on two consecutive evenings (Friday, June 30th and Saturday, July 1st, 2017). However, since the final of the U-21 European Championship 2017 in men's football with unexpected German participation was played on June 30 and broadcast live by ZDF , they wanted to avoid this strong competition and decided not to broadcast it. The opening sequence was postponed by one day and all subsequent episodes by one week each. The last broadcast of the season was broadcast on Friday, August 11th, as Ninja Warrior Germany - the strongest show in Germany - started the next day .
