Theodor Joseph Hagen (born May 24, 1842 in Düsseldorf , † February 12, 1919 in Weimar ) was a German landscape painter .

Life

Hagen came from a long-established Rhenish merchant family . From 1858 to 1868 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . Besides Oswald Achenbach , whose landscape classes he attended from 1862 to 1868, his teachers were Josef Wintergerst , Andreas and Karl Müller , Ludwig Heitland , Heinrich Mücke , Rudolf Wiegmann and Carl Irmer . In 1871 he was appointed to the Grand Ducal Saxon Art School in Weimar , where he succeeded Max Schmidt in the landscape painting class. In 1874, Hagen was the first teacher at the Weimar art school to receive a permanent contract. From 1876 to 1881 he was director of this art school , but gave up this administrative activity again in order to be able to devote himself entirely to painting and art teaching. His most important student was Christian Rohlfs . His master students Karl Buchholz , Franz Bunke , Rudolf Höckner , Franz Hoffmann-Fallersleben also became known , other students were Paul Baum , Paul Eduard Crodel , Joseph Rummelspacher , Carl Malchin , Peter Paul Draewing and Alfred Heinsohn .

Hagen is considered a style-defining representative of the Düsseldorf and Weimar Schools of Painting and a founder of German Impressionism . After he had turned to different styles in his early days, he discovered the French realism and the French plein air painting of the Barbizon school . Hagen often went on excursions into the great outdoors and painted landscapes with a simple mood. Through his friendship with Alfred Lichtwark , from 1886 first director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle , he came to the Hanseatic city , where a series of port pictures was taken.

Above all, the painter took part in numerous group exhibitions, including at the Berlin Academy , the German Association of Artists in Weimar and the Munich Glass Palace . From 1893 he was a member of the Munich Secession , from 1902 the Berlin Secession , and after 1903 also a member of the German Association of Artists .

Theodor Hagen's works can now be found in private and public art collections in Berlin, Hamburg, Dresden , Magdeburg , Düsseldorf, Munich, Stuttgart and Weimar, among others .

The Theodor-Hagen-Weg bears his name in Weimar . The family's house at today's Trierer Straße 36 is a designated individual monument of the city of Weimar. He is buried in the historical cemetery in Weimar .

A special exhibition on the 100th year of Theodor Hagen's death in 2019 in the art museum in the Schwaan watermill shows selected works by students, teachers and masters of the Weimar School of Painting under the title "Chroniclers of the Landscape".
