Thomas Enders (born December 21, 1958 in Neuschlade in the Westerwald ) is a German manager . From May 2004 to August 2007 he was Chief Executive Officer of EADS (now Airbus Group ). On August 27, 2007 he was appointed company director of the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus . From June 1, 2012 to April 10, 2019, he was CEO of Airbus SE . Enders was President of the Federal Association of the German Aerospace Industry (BDLI) from 2005 to 2012 .

In June 2019 Enders was elected President of the German Society for Foreign Policy .

Life

After graduating from high school at Kopernikus-Gymnasium Wissen, the son of a shepherd served as a paratrooper in the armed forces and is currently a reservist with the rank of major of the reserve. Between 1978 and 1983 he studied economics and politics and history at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the University of California, Los Angeles . In 1987 he received a scholarship from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation under Wolfgang Pfeiler (the second reviewer was Karl Dietrich Bracher ) at the University of Bonn with a thesis on the SPD and external security as a Dr. phil. PhD .

From 1982 to 1985 he worked as an assistant in the German Bundestag and between 1985 and 1987 as a research assistant at the research institute of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Sankt Augustin . In 1988 Enders became a research associate at the research institute of the German Society for Foreign Policy in Bonn and a senior research associate at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London .

From 1989 to 1991 Enders was a member of the planning staff of the Defense Ministry in Bonn under Defense Minister Gerhard Stoltenberg . From 1991 to 1995 he worked at MBB / DASA in Munich , where he held various positions in the marketing department. From 1995 to 1996 he acted as managing director and chairman of the supervisory board at DASA . From 1996 to 2000 Enders was director of the “ Corporate Development and Technology” department at DASA.

In 2000, Enders became Deputy Chairman of the Board of Management and a member of the Steering Committee of EADS (Head of Defense and Security Systems Division). Since May 2004 he has been CEO of EADS Deutschland GmbH. His military career earned him the nickname Major Tom at EADS . Enders is also on the supervisory boards of Deutsche BP Aktiengesellschaft and Dornier GmbH - there as chairman.

In July 2007, in response to the crisis at EADS subsidiary Airbus , Enders was appointed Managing Director of the aircraft manufacturer. EADS 'billion dollar deals under Enders included a. Arms deals, including border security systems, with Saudi Arabia .

At the end of January 2012, the EADS Board of Directors gave its approval for Enders to replace the French Louis Gallois as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the European aerospace and defense group in 2012 . He took over from Gallois on June 1, 2012.

In 1984, 2005 and from 2009 to 2015 Enders was a participant in the Bilderberg Conference .

From mid-2005 to June 30, 2009 he was chairman of Atlantik-Brücke e. V. Enders was a member of the CSU ( Tegernsee Local Association ). In March 2011 he resigned from the party, which he justified with the policy of the coalition in the federal government on Libya and the nuclear moratorium .

In December 2017 it was announced that Enders will not renew his contract with Airbus and will vacate his post in April 2019. At the same time, corruption investigations were launched in the United Kingdom and France on suspicion of bribery of foreign officials and alleged money laundering. Enders had been heard as a witness. At the same time, there had been technical problems with the engines of Airbus medium-haul aircraft.

On October 8, 2018, the board of directors of the European aerospace company announced that the Frenchman Guillaume Faury will succeed Enders. He took over as CEO of the Airbus Group on April 10, 2019. Faury has been head of the passenger aircraft division, by far the largest pillar of Airbus, since the beginning of 2018.
