Career

Rabe started his professional life at the European Commission in Brussels. From 1989 he worked for the General Directorate for Financial Institutions and Corporate Law. A year later, he and his manager moved to the law firm Forrester, Norall & Sutton, now part of White & Case . There he looked after clients from the European Union , the United States and Japan . In 1991 Rabe was employed by the Treuhand in Berlin. As part of this activity, he was responsible, among other things, for the privatization of the assets of the Ministry of State Security and the National People's Army . In 1993 he was promoted to Head of Controlling . Then Rabe worked as Head of Acquisitions at the investment company Neue Lander of the Association of German Banks to invest 400 million marks in East German companies. After completing his doctorate, Rabe signed up in 1996 as office manager of the CEO of the Luxembourg financial services provider Cedel International. He held other positions there before being named Chief Financial Officer in 1998 . In the following years he prepared the merger of Cedel International with Deutsche Börse Clearing to form Clearstream .

In 2000, Rabe moved to RTL Group as CFO . There he was also responsible for strategy and the Luxembourg television and radio business. Five years later, Bertelsmann finally brought him to Gütersloh. Rabe was appointed CFO on January 1, 2006. At the same time he was responsible for the Bertelsmann Music Group until 2008 . In addition, Rabe negotiated, among other things, the repurchase of the shares of Groupe Bruxelles Lambert , which prevented Bertelsmann from going public . The group also set up its own investment fund, Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments. Rabe later organized Bertelsmann's return to the music business. The fact that he included Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. in BMG Rights Management was considered an important decision for further development.

Rabe was temporarily appointed as the future CEO of the media group ProSiebenSat.1 Media and the investment holding Franz Haniel & Cie. traded, but ultimately stayed with Bertelsmann. After Hartmut Ostrowski announced his retirement from the top of the board in 2011, Rabe was appointed as his successor with effect from January 1, 2012. With the appointment, Bertelsmann initiated a change in strategy towards stronger growth. Under the new leadership, Bertelsmann expanded to Brazil , China and India . A visible sign was the bundling of these activities in the Bertelsmann Investments division . In addition, Rabe succeeded in merging Penguin Books with Random House to form the world's largest book publisher, as well as purchasing the remaining shares in Gruner + Jahr . He expanded the education sector into another pillar of the business, which today operates under the name Bertelsmann Education Group . He brought the printing companies together in the Bertelsmann Printing Group . By 2016 he increased the number of corporate divisions to eight.

Rabe's contract as CEO of Bertelsmann runs until 2021. As Chief Executive Officer, he heads the RTL Group and has a seat on the Board of Directors of Penguin Random House . In addition, Rabe was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Symrise and is currently Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Adidas .
