Tobruk , also known as The Cannons of Tobruk , is an American war film directed by Arthur Hiller from 1966. The German premiere took place on March 10, 1967.

In September 1942 the German troops under Field Marshal Rommel were only a little more than 100 kilometers from the Suez Canal . British 8th Army headquarters approve the plan to destroy the fuel bunkers in Tobruk . The initiator of the plan, Major Craig, was arrested by pro-German troops from the French Vichy government and interned in the port of Algiers . Major Craig is a Canadian desert specialist who specializes in desert topography and exploration, especially the Sahara . It is therefore a very important link in the chain for the successful implementation of the plan. Craig is freed from a command under Captain Bergman and taken to Kufra . Colonel Harker announced that he had eight days to carry out the plan to get from Kufra to Tobruk and destroy the depots. The soldiers involved, Jewish emigrants, are to be brought to Tobruk as prisoners of war by disguised special forces.
On the way to Tobruk, the troops encounter British planes attacking the “German” convoy, German and Italian troops and Tuaregs . A group of Tuaregs has two British prisoners, a father and daughter, and is on their way to Cairo . You have papers with you that contain an agreement between the German Reich and Egyptian officers to lead Egypt into a war against England. There is also one traitor among them who is doing everything possible to get this agreement into force. But the plan of destruction can be carried out and the conspiracy of the Egyptian officers exposed.

First Laurence Harvey was supposed to play Major Craig, but he was replaced by Rock Hudson. Originally, the role of Colonel Harker was offered to Dirk Bogarde , who in turn was ultimately given to Nigel Green. Screenwriter Leo Gordon also played a small role as Sergeant Krug. The Oscar -prämierten Henry Bumstead and Alexander Golitzen the Designer were of the film.
The film was shot in Spain, California and Arizona. The 40th Armored Division of the California National Guard provided technical support. American M3 - half-tracks were to represent Sd.Kfz. 7 used. M135 and M54 from the 1950s were used as German trucks .
Parts of the film material were used in 1971 in the film At Dawn, Hell broke loose (original title: Raid on Rommel ) by Henry Hathaway .
Tobruk is not to be confused with the film Taxi to Tobruk , which has a similar plot.
Reviews
For the film service , Tobruk was "[e] into an unbelievable war adventure with a grotesque distortion of the Germans, which combines elements of the agent film with some superficial political comments". The Protestant film observer said that the film gave viewers "ambivalent feelings", because "this well-intentioned, perfect Hollywood film in the style of a great ripper can do nothing to illuminate the phenomenon of war". Therefore the conclusion was: "With the said - not insignificant - restriction: from 18."

At the 1968 Academy Awards , the film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects ( Howard A. Anderson and Albert Whitlock ) .
