Deadline for death - Nemez and Sneijder determine (working title deadline ) is a German-Austrian television film from 2019 by Christopher Schier with Josefine Preuß as Commissioner Sabine Nemez and Raymond Thiry as case analyst Maarten S. Sneijder. Verena Kurth's script is based on the novel Deadline for Death (2013) by the Austrian writer Andreas Gruber . The first broadcast took place on October 6, 2019 on Sat.1 emotions , one day later on Sat.1 .

action

The characters from the children's book Struwwelpeter are the model of a series of murders , the beginning of which is the discovery of a woman's corpse in the Frauenkirche in Munich . The victim suffocated on a large amount of ink , based on the story of the black boys . Two days before the murder, a close friend of the murder victim received a clue with a riddle and 48 hours' notice, whereby solving the riddle could have saved the victim from death.

There were similar cases in Dresden and Cologne . Munich Commissioner Sabine Nemez begins to investigate the victim in the Frauenkirche until the BKA intervenes. The forensic psychologist Maarten S. Sneijder, a stubborn but brilliant case analyst from the Netherlands to take over the search for the serial killer. For Nemez, solving the case is a personal concern. She therefore convinces Sneijder to continue investigating with him.

The traces also lead them to Vienna , where psychologist Helene Berger received a package with a severed thumb, similar to the story of the thumb sucker . It is unclear whether the victim is still alive and can still be saved, a race against time begins. The question also arises as to why the perpetrator chooses Heinrich Hoffmann 's children's book as a template for his deeds. With the help of the Viennese colleagues, it is possible to find the trail of a criminal who was obliged to seek psychological treatment. The only one who had advocated that the young man did not have to go to prison was Helene Berger, the person who was also sent the riddle and who has since turned to the police.

So it is possible to find two of his victims still alive, but meanwhile he kidnaps Helene Berger because he has not yet "worked through" all of Struwwelpeter's stories . Since the origin of Carl Boni's psychological disorder lies in his childhood, the investigators suspect that he chose a place of his childhood for the last two "stories". So they should be right and can save Helene Berger. Boni himself has meanwhile gone to the roof of the building and jumps down with a red umbrella - analogous to the story of the flying Robert . Boni had chosen the children's book as a template because it was the first book his father had given him.

criticism

Maximilian Haase found in the Weser Kurier that Josefine Preuss as a commissioner and her Dutch colleague would fight nicely, Nemez and Sneijder could become a new crime thriller dream duo. Haase wrote: "The German and her Dutch colleague are facing a sadist who plays deadly games and sets the investigators a deadline - the well-known Saw series sends its regards."

Leading actress Josefine Preuss said in relation to the literary original Struwwelpeter that she found it “almost terrifying”, “how brutal, cruel and, from today's perspective, educationally worthless these stories are for children”.

Julian Miller said onquotemeter.de that the film would avoid overstimulating its clever basic idea and instead rely on the strength of its investigative characters and their competent actors. Despite the many well-thought-out impulses, the result is surprisingly inconspicuous. Preuss and Thiry could find out something like this through a crime scene in Munich or Dresden . "One might understand that as an affront, after all, Deadline seems to please itself with its thoroughly innovative basic idea - or as a compliment to be able to take on the most popular and popular crime franchise in German television history."

Tilmann P. Gangloff from tittelbach.tv wrote that the film would get its appeal not least from the unequal title duo. Another reason for advertising in addition to the plot and the main actors is the outstanding optical quality, the image design is almost cinema-quality.

Audience rating

The free TV broadcast on Sat.1 on October 7, 2019 reached 1.66 million viewers, corresponding to a market share of 5.7 percent. 0.64 million viewers came from the advertising-relevant target group of 14 to 49 year olds. This corresponded to a 7.4 percent market share.
