Tony Walton

Anthony "Tony" John Walton (born October 24, 1934 in Walton-on-Thames , Surrey , England ) is a British art director , costume and production designer who won both an Oscar for best production design and an Emmy and three Tony awards won.

Life

Film career and Oscar winner

Walton was married to actress Julie Andrews from 1959 until their divorce in 1967 . From this marriage the actress and writer Emma Walton , born in 1962, emerged.

He received his first Oscar nomination in 1965 for costume design in the color film Mary Poppins (1964) by Robert Stevenson with his wife Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and David Tomlinson in the leading roles . He got another Oscar nomination for best costume design at the 1975 Academy Awards for Murder on the Orient Express (1974) by Sidney Lumet with Albert Finney , Lauren Bacall and Martin Balsam . In 1975 he also received nominations for the British Academy Film Award (BAFTA Film Award) for best art direction and best costumes for this film .

At the 1979 Academy Awards , he received two nominations for the film The Wiz - The Magic Land (1978) by Sidney Lumet with Diana Ross , Michael Jackson and Nipsey Russell : On the one hand with Philip Rosenberg , Edward Stewart and Robert Drumheller for the production design, for others for the best costume design. For this film he was also nominated in 1979 for the Saturn Award for best costumes.

In 1980 he won the Oscar for best production design with Rosenberg, Stewart and Gary J. Brink in Behind the Spotlight (1979) by Bob Fosse with Roy Scheider , Jessica Lange and Leland Palmer .

Together with John Kasarda and Robert J. In addition to his film career, Walton was also a recognized theater costume and set designer and was first nominated for the 1967 Tony Award for best costume design in The Apple Tree . In 1973 he won the Tony Award for best production design in Pippin for the first time . Further nominations for the Tony Award followed in 1976 for production design in Chicago , 1980 in A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine and 1984 in The Real Thing .

In 1986 he won the Tony Award for The House of Blue Leaves , then in 1987 for the production design in The Front Page , in 1988 for the costumes in Anything Goes and for the production designs in 1989 in the comedy Lend Me a Tenor , and in 1990 in the musical Grand Hotel and was nominated for a Tony Award in 1991 in The Will Rogers Follies .

He won his third and final Tony Award in 1992 for production design in Guys and Dolls . He was then nominated for the set design in She Loves Me in 1994 , in Steel Pier in 1997 and most recently in Uncle Vanya in 2000.
