The 4th stage of the 2007 Tour de France on July 11th was 193 kilometers long and took the riders from Villers-Cotterêts south-east to Bourgogne , in particular through the Aisne , Seine-et-Marne , Aube and Yonne departments to Joigny . It was the first stage of the event, which took place exclusively within France. The fourth flat section, with a total of four smaller mountain ratings, was slightly more wavy in profile than the previous stages.
The racing action was initially determined by the Équipe Cofidis , who, with Stéphane Augé, held the wearer of the dotted jersey in their ranks. Together they led the field to the first mountain classification of the day at 23.5 km. After 29 kilometers driven, the first attacks began. Ultimately, a quintet, consisting of the initiator of the escape, Matthieu Sprick , Christian Knees , Juan Antonio Flecha , Sylvain Chavanel and Gorka Verdugo , was able to pull away from the field. As a result, the group of five gained a maximum advantage of just under four minutes, while a fall occurred in the main field, which split the field into two parts for a short time. Nevertheless, the outliers' lead decreased slightly and eventually leveled off at around two to four minutes.
When the lead fell under a minute 25 kilometers from the finish, the unity in the escape group ended. After increasing the pace, first from Knees and then from Sprick, the group split up for a short time, but then got back together. After another attack nine kilometers from the finish line, Chavanel and Verdugo fell back and were immediately taken over by the peloton. Meanwhile, Knees launched another attack that fell victim to Sprick. Finally, the main field was the remaining duo around Knees and Flecha, when seven kilometers still had to be covered.
The peloton, led by the sprinter teams, drove to Joigny, where the Norwegian Thor Hushovd won the sprint ahead of the South African Robert Hunter and the Spanish three-time world champion Óscar Freire .
There was no change in leadership in any of the individual scores or the team scores. Thor Hushovd was able to advance to second place in the overall standings thanks to time credits. He was 29 seconds behind the wearer of the yellow jersey Fabian Cancellara . Erik Zabel moved up to second place in the points classification.
