The 5th stage of the Tour de France 2008 on July 9th was 232 kilometers long, making it the longest stage of the 2008 Tour. It ran from Cholet to Châteauroux . There were three sprint classifications on the program, there were no mountain classifications.
The race started very quickly after the start, a group consisting of Lilian Jégou , Florent Brard and Nicolas Vogondy was only able to break away from the field at kilometer 11, each of whom won a sprint classification during the course of the stage. After that, things got quieter in the field, where the Gerolsteiner team mostly made the pace. The three outliers were able to achieve a maximum advantage of 8:15 minutes. Alejandro Valverde was also affected in one of the falls in the field, but he was able to continue the race without major injuries. The field only caught up with Jégou and Brard two kilometers before the finish in Châteauroux, the undaunted fighting Vogondy tried to win the stage and was overtaken by the sprinters only fifty meters before the finish line. There Mark Cavendish was able to prevail on the 1,600 meter long and 8.5 meter wide home straight ahead of Óscar Freire and Erik Zabel in the sprint. There were no changes in the individual ratings. Mauricio Soler , winner of the dotted jersey last year, who crashed again in the neutral zone on this tour, had to give up the tour.
