The 1st stage of the Tour de France 2011 led over 191.5 km from the Passage du Gois to the Mont des Alouettes on July 2nd and was not a prologue or a longer time trial as is usual. As with every stage of this Tour de France, there was a sprint classification on the flat stage , and there was also a 4th category mountain classification. All 198 registered drivers started.

Race course

Shortly after the start behind the Passage du Gois, Lieuwe Westra , Jérémy Roy and Perrig Quéméneur were able to pull away and quickly gain a lead of over six minutes. Then the distance narrowed again. Several falls occurred during the stage, although all riders were able to continue. Jeremy Roy won the intermediate sprint of the day, the field was led by Tyler Farrar in the sprint standings, followed by André Greipel .

A few kilometers before the finish line, the three outliers were caught again. Shortly afterwards there was a fall, with several of the class riders, including last year's winner Alberto Contador , being held up. Alexander Vinokurow and Fabian Cancellara attacked first in the final climb . Then, however, Philippe Gilbert and Cadel Evans were able to pull away easily, with Gilbert taking the day's victory. The first group followed, six seconds behind, led by Thor Hushovd .

Contador's group crossed the finish line 1:20 minutes behind the winner and 1:14 minutes behind the first group. Before the final climb, another group with Andy Schleck was also involved in a fall and was overtaken by the Contador group. However, since the second incident occurred in the last three kilometers, the Schleck group was only six seconds behind.
