The 16th stage of the Tour de France 2011 on July 19th led after the second rest day over 162.5 kilometers from Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux to Gap . On this low mountain range there was a sprint rating and a mountain rating of the 2nd category. As in the last stage before the rest day, 170 of the 198 registered drivers started.

Race course

Immediately after the start there were many escape attempts, but none of the drivers managed to stay in front. The field stopped all attempts because too many teams were interested in sending outliers to the front. In the first hour of the race, 51.4 km were covered in this way. Particularly frequently showed, among other things Sylvain Chavanel , David Millar , Remy Di Gregorio , Juan Antonio Flecha and Arnold Jeannesson forward. In the further course several and larger groups managed to stay ahead a little longer at the same time, but they were not given a large gap either.

It was only after about 91 kilometers that a group of ten people could slowly form and withdraw, consisting of Thor Hushovd , Alan Pérez , Ryder Hesjedal , Edvald Boasson Hagen , Dries Devenyns , Andrij Hrywko , Jérémy Roy , Tony Martin , Michail Ignatjew and Marco Marcato . Behind them a chasing group formed with Bauke Mollema , Samuel Dumoulin and Fabrice Jeandesboz . The first group quickly achieved a lead of over six minutes. Devenyns won the sprint ranking ahead of Roy. The last two remaining points behind the two groups were made by two riders from ag2r La Mondiale . The chasing group fell apart some time later.

On the descent, the Russian Ignatiev moved away from the leading group before climbing to the only mountain classification, the Col de la Manse, but Hushovd closed the gap again. On the mountain, the Russian attacked again, this time pursued by Devenyns and Perez Lezaun, while Hrywko fell back. Later, Hesjedal drove up to the Russian and overtook him. In the meantime, Alberto Contador attacked from the field, further attacks from other drivers followed, which reduced the group. Contador attacked again, initially followed by Thomas Voeckler , then Cadel Evans and later Samuel Sánchez . Everyone else, including Andy and Fränk Schleck, could not follow. Jelle Vanendert led this group .

Meanwhile, Boasson Hagen, Hushovd and Hesjedal, who won the mountain classification, worked together at the top. In the descent, Boasson Hagen took turns attacking Hushovd's Canadian companion. Hushovd was able to achieve the stage victory in the pouring rain in front of his compatriot. The German Tony Martin came in fourth. Evans finished eleventh behind the group three seconds ahead of Contador and Sánchez. In the next group, Fränk Schleck and Voeckler crossed the finish line 18 seconds behind Contador. Ivan Basso crossed the finish line with another group and lost 51 seconds to Contador. The loser of the day, however, was Andy Schleck, who fell further back in the descent and lost over a minute in the overall standings to Contador.
