criticism

Lesotho

In 2003, a court found in Lesotho the company Lahmeyer International as one of several companies guilty in connection with the Lesotho Highlands Water Project related Katse Dam bribes to have paid. As a result, LI was put on a " black list " by the World Bank in 2006 for seven years and excluded from all World Bank contracts. The ban imposed on LI by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in 2007 for the same reason was lifted on March 3, 2008. In order to qualify for an early termination of the World Bank lockdown, extensive project audits were carried out and a comprehensive anti-corruption program (see compliance ) was introduced. As part of this positive development, the World Bank prematurely lifted the lock on August 11, 2011. This makes Lahmeyer International the first company in the world that has successfully passed the World Bank's compliance process and whose ban was lifted early. Other development banks, which Lahmeyer had also blocked in response to the World Bank lock, have already lifted the company's exclusion in advance.

Merowe Dam project

In May 2010 , the NGO European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights filed a complaint against two Lahmeyer employees with the Frankfurt am Main public prosecutor's office for causing a flood . Specifically, it is about the closure of two lock gates of the Merowe Dam in Sudan in 2006 and 2008, about which the population, by local authorities and the company, is said not to have been adequately informed. The result was the flooding of several villages. In contrast, there is an extensive resettlement and compensation program accompanying the project, which is intended to give residents a new and improved livelihood. The Merowe Dam provides energy and water for better living conditions in Sudan. One of the reported employees stated that, as far as the company was aware, the local authorities informed the population in good time that it was generally the task of the authorities and not an engineering consulting company involved in the project to inform them about the closure of lock gates. At the end of August 2011, the Frankfurt / Main public prosecutor's office announced that it had initiated an investigation and is now investigating whether the allegations are justified. In 2015 the case is still pending.
