Transformer station (electric locomotive)
Some older electric locomotives were still used after being shut down as stationary or mobile transformer stations for the supply of electrical systems, such as for heating points or provided passenger coaches . In Austria these transformer stations are called preheating systems . In Switzerland , the more general designation heating locomotive applies , which in Germany is only used for steam locomotives .

After the heating in passenger cars was switched from steam to electric train heating via the train busbar , there was no longer any need for conventional steam heating locomotives. Instead, electric locomotives were used, which had separate transformers or special heating windings on the other transformers to supply the train busbar with a voltage of 1000 V. Only this transformer was required for use as an electric heating locomotive.
As with the steam heating locomotives, parts that were not required for this purpose were removed from decommissioned locomotives . These transformer stations were often supplied with electricity via fixed feed lines instead of via the pantograph . In some cases, the former locomotives were placed on pieces of track specially laid for this purpose, away from the station tracks .
In addition to supplying parked passenger trains , transformer stations were used for other purposes, such as in winter for electrical point heating , where such was available. The heating of the points was often switched from propane gas to electricity beforehand . Another purpose was the provision of electrical power for testing purposes in repair shops , for example the two former locomotives shown opposite in Frankfurt am Main were used for this purpose .
The series E 04/204 for the DR , the series E 52/152 for the DB and the series 1020 and 1670 for the ÖBB were used as electric heating locomotives .
Many former heating locomotives and transformer stations were not scrapped after they were taken out of service, but preserved as museums. Most of them have been worked up at least externally.
