Santiago "Pope" Garcia works as a private military advisor in Colombia against drug crime . During his time there, his informant Yovanna asks him to smuggle her and her brother out of the country in exchange for information about the whereabouts of a drug king named Lorea. Yovanna works for Lorea and regularly delivers huge amounts of cash to his jungle villa.
Yovanna tells Pope that Lorea lives with all of his money in a house in the jungle of the Tres Fronteras triangle . Garcia travels to the United States to round up his old Special Forces friends to officially confiscate the money for the Colombian government. Neither friend had much success in life after the Army . William "Ironhead" Miller makes ends meet with seminars, his younger brother Ben hires out as an MMA fighter. Morales has problems with drugs and law enforcement, and Davis has been divorced and tried unsuccessfully as a real estate agent . The men blame the state and society for their failure in life despite their service to their country. Garcia manages to lure them by pointing out these failures. You eventually decide to steal the money for yourself. Davis makes it clear that he will only take part if only the drug lord is killed. He doesn't want to give up his family.
The group waits until the family and most of Lorea's bodyguards have left Lorea's property for the Sunday service and then penetrates the villa. The remaining guards are overwhelmed.
When searching the house, they find that much more money than the supposed 75 million US dollars are hidden in the house; they can loot more than $ 250 million hidden in the walls of the house. Davis is overwhelmed by greed at the sight of the money and instead of sticking to the schedule, he wants to load as much as possible into the vans. In between they also murder Lorea, who was hiding in the house. The returned guards are shot by the team and you rush to the helicopter meeting point. Despite exceeding the maximum weight of the escape helicopter (a Mi-8 with the Cyrillic inscription "Aerosibir") for the additional money they take off. Davis and Garcia had previously got into an argument because Davis wanted to leave Yovanna and her brother behind for more money. However, Garcia prevailed and took them both away. They transport Yovanna with her brother to Peru and plan to fly over the Andes to a waiting boat on the coast. Yovanna and her brother are deposed and advised to deport to Australia .
When they are finally too heavy to reach the height to cross a summit, they have to make an emergency landing and crash in a field near a village. All remain unharmed, but the armed farmers try to take the money and the team shoots several of the villagers. They compensate the village elder and set off with several mules to transport the money over the mountains. During the arduous march, internal conflicts break out between the team members and a mule falls down a ravine. As they begin the descent towards the sea, Redfly is shot by a young man from the village. This had followed the group and wanted to get revenge on Redfly for the death of his father. He is shot by the others and they take Redfly's body to hand over to his family.
Lorea's gang has militarized the nearest town. The now only four team members throw most of the money into a ravine on the way to the sea, because they can no longer carry it. They are discovered when they have almost reached their destination, but can reach the getaway ship with around 5 million dollars in cash. When they later sit safely with a lawyer, they all spontaneously decide to forego the money that has brought them no luck. They have it sent to Redfly's family.
After that, the team goes their separate ways. Pope plans to go to Australia to find Yovanna. Before Ironhead leaves, he gives Pope coordinates scrawled on a piece of paper, presumably marking the location of the ravine where they left the money.

As early as 2010, the production of the film with Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp in the possible leading roles, directed by Kathryn Bigelow and a script by Mark Boal, was to start, although Bigelow later withdrew from the project because the production failed to materialize.
In September 2015, JC Chandor took over the direction. As of January 2017, Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum were under discussion as the new cast for the main roles and were officially signed a month later, but they also dropped out of the project because Chandor rewrote the script.
On April 12, 2017, a month before filming began, it was reported that Triple Frontier had been dropped by Paramount Pictures and Tatum and Hardy were no longer part of the cast. In the same month, Netflix entered into negotiations to acquire the film rights and then secured them.
On March 19, 2018 it was announced that main production would start in March 2018. The shooting took place in the US states of Hawaii and California as well as in Colombia .

Film critic Rudolf Worschech rated the film in epd Film as “a superb, yet subtle action film”.
