action

After Christian Longo's wife and three children were found murdered, he was arrested in Mexico . He claims to be a journalist for the New York Times , his name is Michael Finkel.

The real Michael Finkel has since lost his job at the New York Times due to unclean journalistic research and is unsuccessfully applying to other media out of the rural remoteness of Montana. He is contacted by a journalist and questioned about Longo's testimony. Finkel, who had never heard of the murder before, visits Longo in prison. Longo tells him that he has been watching him for years and that he is fascinated by his writing style and articles. He wants to tell him his entire story if Finkel teaches him skills in journalistic writing in return. Finkel visited Longo in prison for several months and also received a large number of letters from him, including an 80-page listing of all the mistakes Longo made in his life. Over time, Finkel noticed more and more similarities between himself and Longo. As the case is about to go to trial, Finkel becomes unsure whether Longo is actually guilty. Longo explains to him that he will plead innocent and that he did not kill his family.

At the hearing, Longo pleaded guilty to the murders of his wife and one of his daughters, but pleaded not guilty to the other two murders. He then explains to Finkel that he had to do this in order to protect people whom he no longer mentions. At the trial, Longo gives his version of what happened. He claims that after a heated discussion with his wife, he came home to find one of his daughters passed out; the other two had disappeared. When he questioned his wife, she said she put the children "in the water". In a rage, he then strangled his wife to death and granted his unconscious daughter a mercy death.

While the jury is deliberating, Finkel's wife visits Jill Longo. She describes him as a narcissistic murderer who can never escape from who he really is. The court eventually finds Longo guilty in all cases and sentenced him to death. Longo winks at Finkel while the verdict is being pronounced. Finkel is shocked to realize that Longo has lied to and instrumentalized him the whole time. Longo adopted Finkel's pictorial language and in some cases even complete formulations as his own in order to appear more credible in the eyes of the jury. Finkel visits Longo on death row and tells him that he will warn the appeals court of Longo's manipulative character and his stories of lies. Longo congratulates him on the success he had with his book about their meetings, which Finkel visibly shakes.

Some time later, Finkel reads a chapter of his book True Story at an author reading . He imagines seeing Longo in the hall and how he tells him that since he has lost his freedom, Finkel must have lost something too.

In the credits it is stated that Finkel was no longer active for the New York Times after his experiences . However, the newspaper published several of Longo's works that he wrote while on death row.

music

When Jill visits Longo in prison, she plays him a recording of Carlo Gesualdo's madrigal "Se la mia morte brami" (When you want me dead). She explains to him that, despite the beauty of Gesualdo's music, she is always aware of the fact that Gesualdo killed his wife, their child and his wife's lover. The Appassionata of Beethoven plays Eliska Novotna-Gazdova.

criticism

The film received mixed reviews. On the Rotten Tomatoes portal , it achieved a rating of 45% based on 141 reviews, with an average rating of 5.5 / 10.

"Captivating up to the last second: a clever thriller that does without shock effects."

“There is a lot of explosive in the story and it is almost necessary to reflect on the truth in the media. But the directorial debutant Goold does not really bring the intriguing conflicts to unfold: The factual thriller lacks tension for a long time and the analytical examination of the topics gets stuck in the beginning. So the climax of it all is the performance of Jonah Hill, who after his Oscar nominations for Moneyball and The Wolf Of Wall Street made a name for himself again as a character actor. "
