Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam ( German : The Man Who Saves the World ), also known as Turkish Star Wars and Murat - A Kung-Fu Turk saves the world , is a Turkish science fiction film , which because of its trash content among cineastes a became well known, although it was neither shown in cinemas outside Turkey nor officially dubbed .

Story of the movie

During a space battle, the last Terran hope against a foreign power, in the distant future the Turkish overthrow space - pilot Murat and Ali on a desert planet from.

There they are attacked by the mounted skeleton warriors of the vicious galactic tyrant and emerge victorious from the battle without great effort . Soon after, however, they come under the control of the tyrant who wants to force them to take part in gladiatorial fights .

It is revealed that the tyrant is a sorcerer originally from Earth and exactly 1000 years old. He wants to subdue the earth, his attacks have so far always concentrated by a shield of human brain - molecules blocked. In order to destroy this impenetrable shield, he needs a particularly “good” human brain.

The protagonists can escape and take refuge in a cave full of people who hide there from the cruel rule of the tyrant. Murat falls in love with one of the women present. Thereupon zombies directed by the tyrant attack the cave. The now three main characters manage to escape after they witnessed several children being killed and turned into zombies.

They reach a local canteen, where they are first involved in a fight. Then the tyrant appears out of nowhere and kidnaps Ali. A little later, the girl's father, Bilgin, informs Murat of the existence of a sword that was made by the "Thirteenth Tribe" "thousands of years ago" by melting a mountain of bronze . In addition, they bundled the entire knowledge and wisdom of men from 1000 years in one brain. The sword and brain are in the tomb of Hacı Bektaş Veli , which landed on the desert planet together with a broken piece of earth.

A little later Murat finds the great lightning-shaped sword and the brain in a cave and quickly defeats two golden ninjas who guard it. He sets about using the power of the sword to free his comrade from the tyrant's power.

Unfortunately, Ali was brainwashed into a puppet of the tyrant and tried to take his sword from him. Murat is forced to kill his friend, but realizes that it was just a mirage. He can free the real Ali from a torture machine.

Ali is of the opinion that only he can save the world and demands the sword. During the ensuing argument, he knocks Murat down and brings sword and brain to Bilgin. But Alis Bilgin turns out to be the wizard who has changed his form. Ali is powerless in a duel, but Murat appears at the right time. The magician is not defeated, but put to flight without taking his brain and sword with him.

The real Bilgin proclaims dying that the wizard now has the power to destroy the earth, since he has held sword and brain in his hand. Ali feels guilty for this mess, hurries out the door and blows up a bomb that the wizard apparently knowingly placed there in an unobserved moment.

Filled with grief and anger, Murat melts the sword to dip his hands and feet in the molten metal. This gives him magical golden gloves and boots with which he takes on the fight against the tyrant.

He throws his entire arsenal of creatures on his neck - including skeletal warriors , mummies and two-meter-high red plush monsters - while he gives the final orders for the final destruction of the earth.

When his fighters can't do anything against Murat, he takes on him himself, but is defeated in a showdown , whereupon the attacking space fleets of the tyrant explode. The world is saved and Murat can go his own way.

criticism

The film enjoys a high degree of awareness and popularity among film buffs around the world. However, this is in no way due to the fact that the plot, equipment, staging , actors or even special effects are of a particularly high standard; in fact, the opposite is always the case:

  • In the space battle scenes at the beginning and at the end of the film, the actors sit in motorcycle helmets in front of a screen onto which scenes from Star Wars are projected. In between you can see other filmed scenes from Star Wars and Flash Gordon
  • The plot seems to dispense with logical connections or explanations, whereby the happening for the viewer can become a series of inexplicable events in confusing places.
  • The mighty, golden sword is a cut to size, golden sprayed, almost 1 cm thick wooden plate. Accordingly, the hero does not shy away from holding it by the (with swords usually sharp) blade.
  • Apparently, all of the costumes were made very simply. It seems that the tyrant's mask is made of cardboard covered with silver foil; and the extraterrestrials wear partly obviously recognizable carnival masks, partly plush skins or, in the case of the mummies, toilet paper .
  • The fight scenes are extremely brutal, for example some of the plush monsters are jumped over with a trampoline and then pierced from behind with the fist or torn in two.

Nevertheless, it is a film that was by no means intended as a parody of Star Wars , but was shot as a serious production and was shown in Turkish cinemas.

It is now considered to be one of the worst ever commercially produced films and belongs to the category of unintentionally funny B-films , including Ed Wood's Plan 9 from Outer Space or Ator II - The Invincible .

The popularity of the film among fans worldwide is unexpectedly high and unusual, especially since the film was never officially released outside of Turkey.

Comments

  • “The makers of this film undoubtedly had a wheel off (not just one, I mean), but for that we have to thank them on our knees. An unbeatable overall audiovisual experience that every trash fan who thinks of himself should have seen and canonized. "
  • “A film that clearly deserves the highest rating, but still does not belong in the top league of trash films. Why? Well ... it's already too bad at times ... for my part, I could never watch “Turk Wars” in one go. Too much trash all at once ... it just didn't work. If you can find the film, you have to watch it! GOT TO!"

production

The filming locations are mainly in Cappadocia , many scenes take place in and in front of abandoned Christian churches and monasteries . One scene of the film was shot in the Alevi tomb of Hajji Bektash Weli; the Turkish “ Obi-Wan Kenobi ” serves here as the imam of the mosque and gives a speech to actor Cüneyt Arkın (in the film Murat ).

continuation

In 2006, DKAO - Turks in Space (original title Dünyayı Kurtaran Adamın Oğlu , translated “The son of the man who saves the world”) was a sequel to the cinemas. In contrast to the first part, the sequel is a comedy and a parody. The parody refers to the first part but also to clichés about Turks. Cüneyt Arkın continues his role there, Mehmet Ali Erbil plays his twin sons Kartal and Şahin, who was kidnapped as an infant and renamed Zaldabar. Arkın can only be seen longer in the final scene. The man he portrays who saves the world was frozen shortly before his death. Only when the world is about to end again does he break through the ice and let his son Kartal save the world with his instructions. The premiere of the sequel took place on December 14, 2006 in Germany and on December 15, 2006 in Turkey. The budget for this film was about five million dollars .
